Ok guys -

My ps pump has been whining for a month or so, checked level (good) and came to conclusion it was just on its way out...
Well I lost power steering on the drive home and when I got home it was bubbling out the cap.... Drove it to work and the cap had blown off from back pressure I assume
Note I also lost power brakes at this time...
The guys at oreillys say I need a flush and not a new pump...
I've got two days before I deploy so I don't have time to dick around- what's the fix!!!
My wife needs to drive it while I'm gone and there ain't no way in hell she can handle it without power steering and brakes!!!
To flush it, get 1 gallon of ATF (I use Castrol Dex/Merc bought from Auto Zone for around $18 + tax). Raise the front end and place both wheels off the ground using jack stands. Remove the return hose from the brake booster to the pump and attach a hose you provide (I think it is a 3/8 hose) from the fitting and run it to a catch bucket. Get a funnel and place it in the power steering reservoir. Start the engine and have someone pump the brake pedal and turn the steering wheel while you add ATF. If you are alone, it will just take longer. DON"T let air into the system! After you run that gallon through it, it will be flushed. If this doesn't fix your problem, you need to replace the pump. Sorry to hear you are in a pinch and I hope the flush does the trick.

If your pump has been whining with plenty of fluid then flushing won't do you any good. Unless you have a blockage somewhere, possibly a hose that collapsed internally, you need a new pump. Pull the pump from the bracket, you'll need the special tool to pull the pulley off, and try and keep it as high as possible to keep air from going into the lines. Once you fill the new pump, a flush is still a good idea to get rid of all the old oil. No reason to run the old oil through the new pump more than you have to. Good luck.

Ok the guys at oriellys told me the hydro boost pump was for dualies. I have srw and DID not get the hydroboost pump is that correct?
Also I was planning on removing the whole bracket the removing power steering pump from bracket outside the truck to give me easier work area, is this a decent plan? How do I keep air out of the lines while doing this?
And should I flush old pump first, then install new pump so I dont get any old **** in it or should I install new pump then flush?
Please reply ASAP I'm about to do this and want to do this right
The guys at O'Reily's are idiots. Buy parts from them if you want, but never listen to them again. They know nothing. These trucks all had the hydroboost if they came with the diesel because we don't have a motor that creates enough vacuum to run a vacuum booster. If you have a diesel, you have hydroboost.
Second, removing the entire accessory bracket on that side of the motor means you still have to pull the alternator. Pull the intercooler tube, the intake back to the crank case vent, and the battery if you really need to. Pulling the bracket off the motor is more work than necessary.
Fill pump after attaching lines, but before lowering it into place. The only reason I said to fill the reservoir before mounting the pump was to insure you let the air out the pump/res. and not go up the lines. But now that I think about it, the return line from the steering box may not allow you to do that. However, it is a return line so a little air in that won't hurt anything. It's the line up to the hydroboost that you really don't want any air in.

Took about 1.5 hrs- installed new pump- flushed old fluid adjusted pulley for squeaks.... Runs silently now and turns lock to lock easier than a compact car while stopped.... Thanks for the help

I was going to advise you to just change out the pump as if you are about to deploy you dont want to leave your wife with a pump that may or may not fail when on deployment. If it is whining now yes you could just flush and possibly fix the problem now and for a few months or years, but it could die on her when you are away and it would be better to just replace it. Good call
