Power Steering Problem. Help PLease!

I got my truck really stuck in some good old clay mud in MAryland. It took two tractors to pull me out. I was cutting the wheels back and forth to try and get new traction when being pulled backwards. I did this a while, but the wheels wouldn't turn much because the mud was so thick. I stressed the power steering. When i got out the Power Steering was making the "LOw fluid SOund". I went to the store the next morning and put a whole bottle of STP fluid in it. Two weeks later the power steering is making the low fluid noise. But i haven't seen any leaks. PLease offer any insight. I don't want to take it to the dealer because the mud is still caked in places i din't even know about.

sounds like the pump was overworked--and overheated--and doing what you did doesnt take long to overheat a pump--been there--

Re: Power Steering Problem. Help PLease!

I'n not too sure about your bottle of STP. Our PS pumps take ATF. Most of us change over to Mobil 1 Syn ATF, because it quiets the rather noisy pumps. CHECK your owners manual. Your STP Power Steering Fluid may have compounded your issues.

Re: Power Steering Problem. Help PLease!

Sounds like you need to try a synthetic ATF flush. Takes about an hour and usuall solves the noise problem. larrys little secrets has the instructions under the power steering pump posts.

Re: Power Steering Problem. Help PLease!

I also agree with a syn. ATF flush. Its the cheapest "fix" you can do for your PS. It helped my "whine" and thankfully I'm still on my 1st PS pump! (knock on wood)
