Purchasing soon...what to look out for?

I am traveling a few hours on Wednesday to look at a '99.5 2WD SuperCrew Super Duty with a 6-speed and 102k miles. This is my first diesel and I want to make sure I know what to look for/be aware of. Any tips are appreciated-

Craig

Re: Purchasing soon...what to look out for?

After reading this sight, I'd get an oil sample and have it analyzed before I bought used. Seems to be highly recommended by most here. Good luck on your new truck!

Thanks for the tip...what kind of shop would analyze that? Any regular parts house, or does it have to be specific?

Man...I didn't save the webpage, but one of the other threads gave a webpage of an analysis lab. Lemme see what I can find.

Ok..this is the lab one of the other guys in another thread was referencing. I guess it's a mail in thing that he uses. Anyhow, I'm guessing someone at a local diesel shop should know someone local if they are available. I can't speak for these guys, but someone else recommended them. Link is below.

Good luck!

Re: Purchasing soon...what to look out for?

Blackstone Labs is the one used the most for oil analysis on TDS and they are pretty quick if you give them your Email address to send the results to.
This Thread will give you some more things to look at especially the dusting issue with these PSDs.

Re: Purchasing soon...what to look out for?

Thanks Kirk and FMT. I don't know about the oil sample at the time, but I know I can check for dusting. If there is a little bit of sand/dirt in there, is this something I should completely back away from, or know about the issue and fix it?

Re: Purchasing soon...what to look out for?

It all depends on the severity of the dusting but it can get real expensive to repair correctly. Turbos, piston and rings worn cylinders and the list goes on.

Re: Purchasing soon...what to look out for?

Is the dusting caused from the airbox not having the recall performed? Can I take the VIN to any Ford dealership and find out if it has been done? Also, where is the cavitation coolant added?
