The dealer diagnosed my squeak under the hood as a bad power steering pump. They are on nation back order and my truck is not first in line for the pump. He said the made a change to the bearings in the pump which is why the pump is on back order. My question is if the power steering pump fail completely what will happen to all the other accessories driven by the power steering pump belt. Also what happens to the brakes and the brake controller.
Thanks
Landis

If the power steering pump fails, then you will loose brake assist and steering assist. You can still stop and turn the truck, but you will have to work your butt off to do it. And, you may not be physically strong enough to stop the truck quickly if necessary. Most electric brake controllers aren't affected. Some brake controllers that rear pressure from the brake system will perform at a reduced pressure.
If the pump fails so that it will still freewheel, then the other accessories will still function. If the pump locks up when it fails, then the belt will be damaged, and will probably be kicked off or break. You will then loose air conditioning, alternator function, and engine cooling.
In other words, don't drive it until it is fixed...
Greg:
Thanks for the reply. I need to pick up a heavy fifthwheel. Guess I will wait until I can get the new p/s pump installed. I have the factory brake controller on my truck. So it will stop working if the p/s pump fails?

I've had 3 go out on my truck, 03 6.0L. I run 38s and 40s, so that's their excuse and I'm sure it doesn't help but I'm not the first to run bigger tires and many do it all the time with no pump problems.

I realize this is an older post, but have an 03 6.0 that is growling at me. Since you have done 3, and I have no knowledge of what I am about to get into, how difficult is it to change one of these and can you offer up suggestions to help diagnose and replace?
The pump growls when I turn wheel to the left mostly, but some to the right as well. I have not had any difficulty turning it as of yet and no other failures.
