rear pinion seal

on my 2000 crewcab long bed duelly I had alot of problems with rear pinion seals going out.3 under warranty 2 more out of pocket.the guys in the shop always told me it was caused by axle wrap due to my power adders and driving habits.since then I have met others with the same problems all have crewcab long beds.I was wondering if anybody had any ideas on how to fix this problem.my 2000 is gone now but my buddy has a similar truck with the same problem. thanks

Re: rear pinion seal

I really dont see how axle wrap can cause it to go out. Has the truck been lifted or have there been any other modifications to the driveshaft?

Re: rear pinion seal

I had to replace one on mine at 35,000 miles. When I noticed it was leaking, I did a little research on here and discovered it is a relatively common problem on CC DRW's. Not sure why, but apparently it is.

I got mine fixed under warranty. It isn't supposed to be a tough job, but if it isn't done correctly, it can be a pain. When they did mine, they replaced the seal and suddenly, I had a bad vibration. They ended up replacing the driveshaft, yoke and another seal before they finally got it right. I suspect they damaged the driveshaft and yoke doing the job the first time, but they didn't say that.......

Re: rear pinion seal

The Dana 80 rear end in your Dooley requires special tools and special knowledge to replace the pinion seal. For example:

<font class="small">Code:</font><hr /><pre>

Torque Specifications
Description Nm lb-ft
Pinion shaft lock nut 637 470

</pre><hr />

That's a lot more torque than the average Joe can put on a nut with an ordinary torque wrench.

I think I would look for a different shop that knows what they're doing when it comes to working on a Dana 80 rear axle.

I special-ordered it new and plan to drive it until it quits.

Re: rear pinion seal
