Replacing ball joints on 2WD

On a 2WD, do I need to remove the rotors to replace the ball joints? The only place I can see that might be difficult is removing the snap ring on the lower one.

I think in the long run, it would be easier just to remove the rotor. As well as the snap ring on the lower joint, you have to work around the rotor to get the upper ball joint clamp bolt loosened, and then need somewhere to whack the spindle/knuckle to get it loose. Then there's lugging the whole assembly around while pressing the ball joints in/out.

JMHO.
