Results on the only 7.3 competetor in Diesel Powers Diesel Challenge

Results of Diesel Power Challenge are in the Sept. issue and the only 7.3 truck fininshed 11 out of 12. Ernest said that he built the truck for lack of decent 7.3's out there and I tip my hat to him. The other Fords competing had a 6.0 or a Cummins.
Twisted his rear axle housing in the pull and got a DNF for that event but after posting 1,027 lb-tq to place 9 out of 12 for the dyno run.
My question is this:
The injection system has long been blamed for the 7.3 short cummins (get it?) but with big oil, including the Stealth Pump on the way, compound turbos, bigger injectors, tunes and everything else we can do...whats the deal? The 7.3's stroke is not as long as the 5.9's but neither is the Dmax's. I know that maybe Im just venting but I was really rootin for the 1 guy out of 12 who put in the effort to run a 7.3 in the challenge.

According to Ford specs, the highest HP put out by a factory stock 7.3L was 275 - in the 2001-2003 7.3L with stick shift. Max HP with an automagic tranny was 250.

The first 6.0L in 2003 models put out 325 HP and 560 lb/ft torque. The last 6.0L in the 2007 models also put out 325 HP, but torque had been tweaked to 570.

And yes, the 6.0 was designed to compete with the Dmax and Cummins for increased HP from the factory.

I talked at length with Bean about this, and while he said the new Stage 3 stealth pump will run as large of an injector as you want, the problem was that the HEUI system was still too slow. He said you can't get the fuel out of the injector quick enough, and that would be the big limitation now that the big oil problems seem to be solved.
