Thumbs down Rust Issues.. anyone else in northeast?

2000 here, 157,000 miles.. noticing some general rust problems.. got under the truck today and was amazed.. the bed 'mounts, bolts rails'.. etc whatever you call them are splintering badly.. the rest of the undercarage looks like normal rust for living in the northeast.. my cousin lookin at it and was amazed as well.. he said by the look of these bed 'mounts, bolts rails whatev they are' I would think other things under the truck would be more corroted.. anyone 'up here' have significant rust problems.. obvi i' in the northeast 'rain salt sand' but i guess im askin if anyone have to replace the bed frame rails or whatever you want to call them.. or had major rust problems under the frame that needed fixing..

and if so what was the fix, and possuble total cost etc..

my cuz has a 05 duramax that he plows with and says everywinter he gets under the truck with a gallon of wd4 from napa and sprays everything.. would this help me or just help brake up the horrible rust here and cause early breaking of these rusted parts?

I do know a lot of guys in my area actually take the old motor oil and spray the underside of the truck with it. Not really very environmentally sound but since all of the roads here are chipped shale and oiled once a year what ever drips off their trucks just blends in.

duhhhhh... what a good suggestion.. do they thin it out somehow and spray it with a spray gun? or just like a lil pump sprayer

No just use it straight with a high viscosity spray gun like the one you would use for spray in bed liners. This is an old trick probably done for half a century. Over time it will dry and leave a nice coating. They use salt on the roads here by the metric ton. They use primarily salt as our temps rarely go below the single digits but i do know some areas of the state are starting to use urea based deicers. Which i would imagine is much worse for the steel then salt but much more environmentally safe.

You have the same disease that most northern truck owners have including myself it starts out as just a little corrosion that then becomes a little rust, which then becomes a lot of rot, and it never sleeps either, continuing to eat away at the metal transforming it back to it's original state. Some of the effected parts on my truck includes the frame, bed fenders (inside and outside), the rails under the bed, bottom of the doors, springs, oil pan, diff. covers, front bumper and other parts that I can't think of right now. What does it cost to repair depends how bad it is, but it can be big $$$$$. Ford truck in the northern rust belt for the last 30 plus years have all had this problem.

where to buy fluid film ?

i m also amazed at the rust/corrosion on under hood components , frame and frame related parts.

my navigators suffered greatly, my 06 gmc dmax looked like it was 20 years old, our company truck , a 2001 gmc 2500 with a plow, only 42k on odo looks like trucks i ve seen with 300,000 miles......

but, oddly, my 3, 20 year old plus "collector" benz s dont look all that bad underside......

Walmart might have it, but any parts store, if they don't have it order it in.

I use it on all my battery connections. My batteries lasted 7 years/160000km with no corrosion on the post/connectors. The other good thing is that it is environmently friendly. Google fluid film for more info. Just spray anywhere your worried about corrosion.

Good luck

Also thank the new eco-friendly anti-corrosion compounds and coatings, paints, etc. While the older vehicles were built with thicker steel, they still would have succumbed if the coatings were not as robust as they used to be.

While that is where many may want to agrue and support the government premse that the new de-icers are no more corrosive, all you have to do is read all the articles from the trucking industry that document the increase in trailer structural and electrical issues since the de-icer introduction.

What are you'lls feelings on Zeibart? I have an appointment to have my two trucks done next week. They are going to undercoat the trucks and seal the rest of the truck as part of their rust prevention deal. I am going to insist they also undercoat the frames plus an extra good coat to the wheel wells. I will use NYCPSDs list of components as a check list...

whats zeibarts warranty against corrosion and rust ? not a bad idea.

i used to undercoat all my vehicles...dealer made fun of me last time i asked for it..... but it did quiet things down alot inside ...

just bought a gallon off ebay....comes with sprayer, and free shipping for 69 bucks.....i ll give it a try ... hopefully beat this winters corrosion..

That' s because they want you not to do it, so you'll come in sooner and buy parts.
