Servicing transfer case ?

I know it uses ATF but should it be synthetic? I haven't looked but I assume there are two plugs one for fill and one for drain? Are they a allen bolt or will the square end of a ratchet work? What is the capacity? What is the service interval. I have 51K and I don't believe it has ever been done, at least I know I haven't since 21K was on the clock. Anything special I should know?
Thanks
Kevin

Re: Servicing transfer case ?

I jsut did both of mine a couple of weeks ago. You will need a 10 mm hex drive socket. I picked one up at Autozone for like &6. There are two plugs, a fill and a drain. Make sure you can get the fill plug out before you drain the oil. I used synthetic Royal Purple myself. I do not think it is required but I figured it could not hurt. You should need two quarts.

Re: Servicing transfer case ?

I had my transfer case serviced in May when Brian installed my BTS transmission. Since it was out of the truck, they drained it and put in Schaeffer's transmission fluid that they use in the BTS transmissions. It's a synthetic blend. Here's the web site link. http://www.schaefferoil.com/204_transmission_fluid.html

Re: Servicing transfer case ?

Thanks y'all, but why do you need to remove the fill plug before draining the oil?

Re: Servicing transfer case ?

Just to make sure you can refill the transfer case, sometimes the plug can get frozen. Happened to me.

Re: Servicing transfer case ?

OK, I went and bought the 10mm allen socket so hopefully it won't be glued or welded in.

Re: Servicing transfer case ?

I'm going to add one more thing (besides taking the fill plug out before draining it). Do not use an air wrench on these plugs and don't overtighten them. They are tapered and they will crack the case if you overtighten them.

Re: Servicing transfer case ?

Did the fluid change last night. Used the new Mobil one synthetic stuff. I put two quarts in but none ran out. I can bend the end of my finger and hit fluid like on a diff.Is this enough fluid or should I get another quart and fill until she runs out?
I think this was the first time it had been changes, 7 years /52K it was pretty black. How often should this be done?

Re: Servicing transfer case ?

I change it every 30k miles or 15K miles if I use 4wd a lot. It's just 2 quarts +/- so it's a cheap change. Yea, if it wasn't completely full I'd add a little more just for giggles.
