My 1999 f-250 just rolled 100,000 miles. I am the original owner & the trans fluid has never been changed. The truck is used on occasion for light towing.
You should have changed it at 30,000, 60,000 and 90,000 miles. So it's way overdue.

Do yourself a favor and put an aftermarket deep aluminum pan on and run transynd atf.
Benefits: pan will provide more capacity and also cool fluid , and transynd (synthetic) withstands higher temps, which in turn means longer change intervals, 100,000 miles on our buses. too bad your trans itself wont last that long.

next mods. ATS comp. housing, replaced inj harnesses/gp harnesses, also valve cover gaskets
As said. CHANGE THE FLUID. ROFLMAO
Also change the filter, real simple to do. Nix the deeper pan, if you think you want better cooling add a cooler. The one for the V10 is bigger. Only you can decide if you want the extra $$ for synthetic. But I changed long ago, because I tow and it gets 115dgF here a lot.
Sure a bigger pan will get you more fluid but when all of that extra fluid finally heats your not going to cool it down with the stock cooler, which after 10 years is probably not as efficient as it was new.
I am still running the original tranny in my truck and am the original owner.

It will provide more capacity, but it doesn't do anything to help cooling. Look up many of my other posts on why not. I don't want to type it all again.

I agree with Mark. I had a larger pan on my '99 and it didn't cool any better. The v-10 cooler did help a lot though. And I ran synthetic oil also and different valving and still blew the trans at 47000 miles. But I was towing heavy and thru the mountains. If you got over 100000 miles out of yours that is great!

It is possible to wait too long to change your fluid. Transmission fluid has a lot of detergent in it to help keep the trans. clean. Years and miles of neglect use up the detergency of the fluid and you get oxidation and varnish buildup that new fresh fluid can soften and release into your trans. where it can restrict flow and prevent valves from functioning properly thereby ruining the transmission. Catch 22. If the fluid is still cherry red and does not smell burnt, clean the transmission pan, change the filter, add a cooler and replace only the fluid lost from the filter change. If it looks or smells burnt I'd change it and still add the cooler.
The 6.0L TorqShift has an external filter located just behind the radiator on the passenger's side. The early 6.4L TorqShift used the same setup. I think it was at Job#2 they eliminated the external filter and changed the internal filter to a filter that is even better than the external filter ever was.

Mark - On a long overdue ATF service (burned very dark fluid ) Do you recommend dropping the pan first and changing any serviceable filter , then refilling and flushing though the cooler return line ? - Thanks
