Slow Crank 7.3

2001 7.3 has developed a chronic slow crank. Had trailer plug wired into bed for 5th wheel about 3 weeks ago. First time starting after, fired right up. Drove to work, sat 4 hours, has cranked slow ever sense. Drove home for 45 minutes, shut off, cranked slow. I have check both batteries unhooked, both check fine and are 6 months old. Checked alternator, charging fine. Went back to trailer place, spend an hour putting LED lights and testing OHM loads and no bad grounds or frayed wires. I left it on charger for 7 hours, no difference. I was thinking starter, but that is relatively new and is only pulling 160 amps. Cleaned battery posts, cables. Thing cranks the same speed if it sits for an hour or a week so I am thinking it is not draining juice. Any ideas? Thanks!!

Have you load tested the batteries? They are usually the suspect here, but a starter could also be the cause. If you decide to change the starter, check out the DB high-torque units. They spin the engine with a lot more force than the stock starters.

I recommend checking the battery cables as well.

I load tested the batteries twice, once connected and then even completely disconnected and they both tested fine. I am thinking starter, but wanted to check any other gremlins before I yanked it out. Would cables be intermittent or consistent in the slow start?

Could be, but generally cable issues are found at the ends - corrosion or broken wires shoulb be easy to see.

Problem solved. Didn't think it through, but because the batteries are in series not in parallel, they will give different readings for pull from starter. I ran the intial test on the driver's battery and it read 160 amps, pretty normal. When I ran the passenger a second time, got a 750 amp reading! So, 910 amps was a bit high. Pulled out starter, replaced and good to go.

Wrong, wrong, wrong there Buckwheat. These batteries are in Parallel. Putting them in series would make 24VDC and in order to do this the negative terminal from Batt #1 would get connected to the positive terminal of Batt #2.
