Reading the "FAQ" & looking around, test so far will be ALOT diff. than here. Test equipt. sure gonna cost less.
Nothing I read said specifically how opacity (smoke particles) would be checked other than visual. HUH? Here..t/p sniffer with readings thru computer while rear wheels on dyno. rollers (under load) determines p.level. But, takes ALOT of smoke to fail.
Thought OBD test might be a problem (speculation on mods), but said test equipt. isnt CAN compatible. So unless changes made, dont think it'll work on 03 or newer. Early models involved I dont know if their OBD compliant?
I suspect any aftermarket parts that effect emissions & arent CARB (ARB) approved will throw up red flag. Obviously all oem/fed. required emission parts should be installed. But, way test could be done I'm not so sure those parts have to work?
Mine hasent flunked so far, but its oem/stock. Anyhow, you'll find out next year. Good lucki!
They really don't say much about exhaust except headers, which we don't deal with and if it came with a cat. it must have a factory one or a EO approved one. Only EO approved chips and no open element air filters, must be in factory style sealed box type.Another question is which vehicles go through the first round of check. Is it odd model year or even, or maybe something else. Or are they going to get all vehicles to get checked next year ?

My K&N FIPK came w/ a carb approved sticker so some open air boxes must be ok.

I think the CARB approval is more a matter of a company willing to pay the money to have "testing" and R & D done to satisfy the air resources board. Many companies dont want to spend the $$ to get that approval. I will venture a guess that this was especially true with diesel compnonents since there were really NO restrictions before. Now that there is, more companies may be willing to invest in the CARB sticker.

I was in just a few days ago getting a car smog-ed (since I am selling it), the state was testing the system that day and the tech told me they don't know exactly what the tolerances will be. The state is sure going to get a lot of new revenue from this. I payed $70 to get my car smog-ed.
I just had my 2000 smog-ed in WA State since I am moving, I had it smog-ed I was way bellow the minims it's chipped with AIS. I did just put in a new HPOP which I am sure had something to do with it.
I guess that means there are currently no approved exhaust mods for the 7.3L engines. There were some for the earlier trucks, mostly by Banks. But it seems no companies have bothered for the 99+ trucks. I wonder if some will see approval now.
I run a 4" exhaust, I suppose that will cause me to automatically FAIL the smog check. This is not gonna be fun!

Wow, this is a major p.i.t.a.! I live in Commiefornia, and have a '99 7.3 PSD that is mostly stock, with the exception of a 4" exhaust. I don't even know if my truck ever even had cat... I bought it used from Oregon. (Does that make a difference?) If I'm supposed to have a cat, does anyone make a 4" cat?
Thanks...

My 03 Excursion w/ the 7.3L did not come with a CAT. I do not know about the 99. I understand that the 03 had a CAT if they came with a stick shift and did not have a CAT if they came with an automatic.
I will tell you what someone who has an 04 F350 with a 6.0L did. It came with a CAT and 3" pipe. He hung onto the CAT when he had the 4" pipe installed. Living in Kalifornia he figured it would be a good idea. So, when these new regulations came out he took his CAT to his exhaust shop, had them install, weld, 4" pipe to the CAT. He then had them cut out a similar length of the exhaust pipe and had them slide the CAT into the cut section and clamp it into place with 4" wide band clamps. When he went to have the inspection done the CAT was installed. Since the 04's, and I believe previous Powerstrokes, did not come with sensors for the CATs no codes were thrown. It was there as required. He kept the removed section of 4" pipe for some reason.
I would suggest that you go to a junk yard, Oops - excuse me- a recycle yard, get a CAT, and have it adjusted to fit as this other man did.
Whether it came from Oregon or Argentina it has to meet Kalifornia CARB requirements. As long as it does, I do not believe that it matters where it came from.

If you look under the hood it will tell you if you had a cat or not. The check is simple I had one done today and passed. I didnt pass a visual yesterday, today I went to a different place and passed. I didnt see them poking around much I didnt even have the waste gate line on.

Thanks, thats a good tip. Can you tell me where the CAT label or sticker is?
I might have to do a bit of "recycling"

I just had my 2003 F350 7.3 with a super chips tuner smogged. I had to remove the tuner because of the snap test. They stomp on the acerator and bring it to 3000 rpm and check for smoke when they let off. My passed with flying colors. They do the snap test 3times in rapid succesion. Any thing under 14000 has to be smogged. I have 193000 on it.

Congratulations on passing, That must be a relief. Do you have a big exhaust, or did you at least remove your cat?
