OK, so Im going to do my best to describe what the noise sounds like, so bear with me. On acceleration I hear what sounds like small metal pieces being blown out of the exhaust, like a *chink, chink, chink*. Not everytime I accelerate, but probably 50-60% of the time, and not hard acceleration, I try to be light on the right foot for fuel mileage purposes. Truck is 2003 7.3 CC FX4, about 45k on the odometer, has been wrecked and repaired. Thanks in advance for the help.
could be a piece in a loose piece in a muffler or a catalytic converter falling appart. Don't know if that truck would have a cat but my mom had a crown vic that made a noise like that when the cat fell appart.

Nope, it doesn't have a cat, but maybe its in the muffler. I hope to be removing the muffler in the next week or so, so that should answer that question. Anyone else have any ideas?
Ok,, your sure it is in the exhaust? Or is that just how you describe it? I guess what I am asking is your sure it is NOT drive train related? Where was the truck wrecked at? Front? side? rear? Could there be something hitting the exhaust?

It is most likely your torque converter conking out.
Do a search on torque converters in the 7.3 forums, and read the descriptions of other people of the sound that it makes. Determine in your own mind if it matches up with what you're hearing.
Be careful. Some of the guys have been seriously inconvenienced and/or swindled by multiple consecutive misdiagnoses.

Well, I did a search and saw the TC noise described as "marbles in a tin can." I guess that could be a good description of what I'm hearing, but I'm not sure (or maybe I don't want to be sure). In what general location would the TC noise be coming from? The noise in my truck really sounds like its coming from right behind the rear passenger seat, towards the exhaust outlet. What other indicators might there be of a TC failing? Thanks a lot for the help. Oh, and the truck was wrecked in the front, replaced front clip.
I THINK usually when the TC locks up the noise stops or gets much quieter doesnt it?
If you are idleing and lay under the truck,,, if it is coming from directly inside the bell housing on the tranny,,then thats it....
Is it ONLY when your driving?

I'm fairly sure that I remember reading that the torque converter problem for which the 4R100 tranny is notorious will not generate noise unless it is under load. Therefore, lying underneath an idling truck will not allow you to eliminate the torque converter from your list of suspects.
You would do well to do some more searching and reading on this topic. I am not well versed in it since I have never owned a 4R100 and never will.
