I have a 2006 super duty 6.0, crew cab,FX4, 20" wheels with 275x65's. I also run a bully dog programmer.(power pup) Last year I was pulling a fairly heavy 16ft dual axle trailer with a Yamaha Rhino(around 1000lbs). My fuel millage dropped all the way to 12mpg on the highway running 70mph. I get a little over 19 with no trailer. I am interested in getting an enclosed cargo trailer this year to better protect my equipment(I travel around the country filming hunts) I am interested in a 6x12 single axle trailer that is relatively light. Any ideas as to if I can expect better, worse or similar fuel economy? The 12 mpg seemed like a pretty substantial decrease in mpg for a diesel engine. All ideas, comments and suggestions are welcomed. Thanks.

I have a 24' enclosed wieghing about 7500#'s and I get an average of 10mpg combination of flat and mountain hills. I tow at 65-70 mph with 35's and on 60 tow with the DP tuner. I use it all going up the hills too! I could get better I think if I was easier on the right foot.

Pulling the TT in my sig i average 13-14mpg in the 60Tow setting, pulling my sons Boy Scout trailer to camp this summer (roughly 14' Haulmark enclosed trailer) i averaged 16.5mpg on a 300 mile loop...Your mileage seems a bit low really...
I get about 14 to 15 in town and pulling my enclosed towhauler (29' sandpipper fully loaded 13,000#'s) i get about 11.5 - 12.5mpg. My buddy has about the same truck as me, but with a 6.0, and about the same trailer setup as me and he gets 10 - 11mpg's while towing. I have 130,000 miles on mine and he has 80,000 miles on his. We travel together at around 65 -70mph.

Using the truck in my sig, I haul a 27' travel trailer generally loaded to its GVWR (7000lbs+). I used my Evolution2 on the race setting (80hp) and on a trip from South Florida to North Georgia and back I got a low of 12.4 mpg, running 70+ trying to catch some friends who had a head start, to almost 15.8mpg running just over 60mph.
That is mph checked with a GPS and miles traveled checked with the same GPS.
I think it has everything to do with how fast and aggressive you drive while towing......
My opinion and worth what you paid for it......

Pulling an 18,000# horse trailer at 65 mph with a 40 tow program I got nearly 11 mpg round trip from Ann Arbor, MI to Lexington Ky and back. AC running at max the entire time. Ambient temps in the low 90s. I thought that was good. Actually I have found the weight makes little difference. Pulling an empty trailer or a full trailer is less than 1 mpg difference. The main issue seems to be aerodynamic. So the enclosed trailer will probably be pretty low mileage if it projects a large frontal areal.

Towing my 6k 26' Prowler TT at 70 I get 12. At 62 I get 14. Unloaded @ 70 I get 18.
Up to you.

THanks for the info. Just seems that as soon as I hook anything to the ball my computer goes crazy and just starts burning fuel. Its a little better since adding the programmer, but I feel like I should be around 15mpg with what I am pulling.
put some 265s back on you will see a big improvement, i did, i used to get around 10 mpgs towing my fully loaded up tt, around 8000 pounds, now with the little 265s iam getting 14 to 15 now. 20 no load.

What I read here a couple of years ago, on the old Ford Diesel.com website, a study some did about towing and fuel mileage....
""IF"" I can remember the conclusion was, that """wind resistance""" was the single biggest determining factor.....SSSOOOOOOO!!!!!! Basically....."""IF""" you want better mileage......"""""SLOW DOWN""""
Well I just replaced my tires about 15K ago, so I cant throw away $1000. When I bought the truck they told me the tire upgrade would kill 1-2 mpg. I didnt notice it until lately. I am getting right at 20mpg(checked this week) on the hwy right now. Most likely I will make a 100 mile trailer pull today so I will take down my mileage. Just seems like I have been loosing way too much on the tow end.
OK....made a 100 mile one way interstate trip today. Pulled my 16 ft dual axle trailer with a yamaha Rhino(about 1000 pounds). Got 14.5 @ 65 on the way there. Left the Rhino and pulled empty trailer home @ 70mph and got 16 mpg. Truck has been averaging 20.5 lately on HWY @ 70mph with no load. Seems a 4.5 mpg decrease is way too much for just an empty trailer.

Its not the weight thats causing you the loss of economy, its the additional DRAG. At freeway speeds, aerodynamics is the biggest thing you have to contend with, and its a cube function. The faster you try to go, the MUCH quicker the economy is going to go down. The trailer is imposing a greater drag penalty the faster you go.
If you want more economy, lower your truck, make it a 2wd, put a tapered cap on the back, keep your tires aired, seal the underside of the truck. If you want to keep the economy high with a trailer, seal the trailer, make it aerodynamic, and keep its tires & brakes in good shape.
I am assuming the enclosed trailer would cause me to burn even more fuel. (the trailer mentioned here is a simple flat bed). I am thinking of adding a camper top and getting an even smaller trailer.(just big enough to hold Rhino and I can keep my equipment in the bed of the truck). Would this help?
