What's the best windshield glass?

Hey all,
The sister-in-law recently cracked the windshield on her Expedition. The glass company quoted her a price for a Carlite replacement, which I believe is Ford OEM. When the install was completed, however, she noticed that the windshield was made by Pilkington. She called back to the glass company to ask what the deal was and the girl on the phone told her the Pilkington glass was better than Carlite. "It's what they use on Mercedes", she said.

I told the sister-in-law that the girl's story sounded like a bunch of you-know-what, but that I would check with the experts at TheDieselStop. I'd always heard that Ford's glass was supposed to be pretty good. Would the Carlite be a better windshield for her?

Re: What's the best windshield glass?

If it fits and doesn't leak then I see know problem, a windshield is pretty basic, maybe one of them kills bugs better.

Re: What's the best windshield glass?

In my ranger the Pilkington replacement was not as good as the Carlite. But this was simply because of the sun-strip at the top. If she likes it, or doesn't know the difference, a piece of glass is a piece of glass. It keeps the wind and weather out, and gives the bugs a sacrificial altar. But if there is anything she doesn't like, I would make them replace it with Carlite and warranty their work.

Re: What's the best windshield glass?

I would stick with the Carlite. I had a side window replaced and opted for Carlite even though it was quite a bit more money.

Re: What's the best windshield glass?

Utah="The construction state".

I would put in the CHEAPEST because I end up replacing it every year anyway at inspection time. I'm still looking for a "lifetime warranty" windshield. They will loose money with me...and I drive like a grandpa!...oh, wait, I AM one!

Re: What's the best windshield glass?

Carlite, Guardian and Pilkington (formerly L.O.F) are all high quality. The only three I use in my vehicles. (Ive been in the glass business for 18 years)

There is a quality issue with some brands, especially with the super dutys and Excursions because of the molding. Others may fit poorly, have bad bends, distortions, contamination in the glass or lamination, mirror brackets falling off.

L.O.F. actually offered that quite a few years ago. It was only for the original customer. Then LOF sold the installation business to Speedy Auto Glass. I hear stories about them still replacing windshields for free from a warranty sold back in the early 90s.
