When to use anti-gel additive?

Been seeing a lot of cold temps here lately and I've been plugging in the block heater nightly. Worst night so far was -6 but on average around 2 to 12 degrees at night and twenties during the day. My step dad said I should be using anti-gel in my fuel but he doesn't have a diesel. I thought I would see what all you experts might have to say.

Rough starting without the block heater, with it plugged in starts like a 70 degree sunny day. Runs fine either way when warm.

It really all depends on what they are putting in the storage tanks where you live. I haven't had a gelling problem in over 30 years that I have been driving a diesel truck in Utah and Colorado and have been running whatever I get out of the pumps at the stations. Now if you live in a area that gets warm temperatures and then turns off real cold you might need to put some in your tank to supplement what the refineries are using.
