7.3 Sounds a little funny when settling to idle then smooths out. Normal??

My new 95 PSD sounds a little funny when going from high RPMs down to idle then after about a second it settles and resumes a nice smooth sound. Is this normal? It also sounds this way when I first start it. It takes a second to find a nice smooth idle. Both events sound the same (like it's fishing for a second to find idle).

Is this normal? This is my first Powerstroke. So far I love it! Much more power and better build quality than my old 6.2 in our Suburban. And... it sounds like a diesel should sound in my opinion.

thanks,
Nick

It is hard to diagnose via your description since it seems to be a normal thing, specially if it only takes "one second". If no other driveability issues arise, then you should just get used to the new sounds of the 7.3 PS. I am not sure if yours has a ExhaustBackpressureValve,EBV, that could be closed for a second to warm the engine faster, but I am only babbling here....welcome to the addictive world of Powerstroke Diesels!!

Is this an auto or a 5 speed? If its the manual, could be the quirks of the dual-mass flywheel.

Thanks! I'm already enjoying. I think it might need a new transmission but that's for another day. I paid $900 and am pretty happy with the way it runs. The vehicle has 384k on the clock and still seems to run great. No blue smoke or burning oil that I notice.

What kind of Preventative Maintenance should I expect?

I can already see it needs some new coolant hoses etc. But other than that what should I be doing? I've heard to keep a CPS in the glove box as a precaution. Hopefully my wife doesn't have it if/when mine goes.

I think the issue your talkin about may be the engine just seeking idle. Drops below, adds fuel to compensate over shoots then settles. Just a querk I think.

As for the CPS ford had a recall on them for my truck. Maybe others. Had mine replaced by Ford, just a month or two ago.

In the perfect world we would all have an on board a supply of all the possible parts which could fail. In the real world you carry a CPS in the box. But the fuel pump craps. Go figure. Or the power steering line blows out of that wonderfully stupid fitting. In the middle of no where. If you live in the stix, carry what you can. And known to be issues. If your near civilization and a well stocked dealer, forget about it. If ya live near one of the guys in this forum your never totally stranded. Ooooo... Sounds like love Don't it.
