97 7.3L Smog Pump Removal Urgent Please Help!!!!

My 97 F-250 has what I guess is a smog pump with belt pulley between the AC and the Power Steering pumps. The pulley bearings gave it up and I cannot find one anywhere. The bearings are inside the pump so I would like to remove the pump or take it out of the picture. Can I just buy a smaller belt and do away with the pulley? Or do they make a eliminator pulley for this model anywhere. i cannot find out any info or parts for this problem. I am also stuck without a ride and a job if I dont get it fixed quickly. Please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That would be your vacuum pump. You need that for your power brake assist (and your heater vent controls, but that's of secondary importance). Most any mass-market autoparts store should have it in stock.

Also, when you go to replace it, you will find that you can't remove the mounting bolts all the way from the pump while the pulley is still on the shaft. That's no problem, just leave the bolts with the pump and then transfer them, along with the pulley, to the new pump while you're at the autoparts store (they should have the proper installer tool on-hand).

Good luck!

It is the vacum pump as mentioned above. The pulley is pressed on and off. Harbor freight makes a pulley puller/installation kit for about $15.00 good for the P/S pulley and the vacum pump pulley. Makes the job sooo much easier. Just did a vacum pump on an '03 Duramax last week.

I bought a shorter belt and bypassed the vacuum pump. I now have very little brakes and no AC. But at least I can drive it to get a pump somewhere. I have been to all the parts stores here and they do not have it. They sent me to the Ford House and they want $285 + tax for it not including the pulley. What a joke. I found one in a junk yard for $100 on the other side of Houston about 70 miles away. But thats my choices.
Thanks for all the replys though. You were right about the brakes and Vent. Is there any way to manually open my vent to get AC?

I just bought one this morning @ kragens ( O'Reillys, Schucks, checker) For 144 out the door. If you go here they can ship it to your house. It was in stock at all 6 locations in my area. There is a core charge but I have the pulley removal kit from Harbor freight so I took the pulley off before I went to the store. Powdercoated the pulley while it was out
