'97 E40D Overdrive light coming on

Hey guys, I did some searching but still a little confused at where to start. Occasionally my truck will just come out of overdrive and the light will come on at the end of the shifter, however it does not blink. Sometimes when I just go to start the truck the light will be on and I will have to depress the button again to turn the overdrive on. It has almost 100k on it and I have owned it since new so its been well taken care of. Could it be as simple as the VSS Sensor Part# F85Z-9E731-AB ???? Its been doing this the last couple of years but only recently seems to be getting worse.

No, it cannot be the VSS. I don't see how you are making that connection, but that is impossible.

The problem is a worn wire inside the steering column. If you take the plastic cover off the column, you'll see where the wire enter the shift handle. That's where the wires often wear through. If the wire to the button has the insulation worn off it can cause this to happen.

This pic & its caption, and the NEXT several, show how to R&R the shift lever from the column:

The other pics & diagrams in that album show almost everything else worth knowing about the column.
