97 ps shuts off going down road

Newbie here...I have a 97 ps manual tranny. I was going down the road and the engine cut off like someone shut the fuel off to it. The gauges and all kept on registering, the electrical kept working. I changed the fuel filter out recently, could the glow plug solenoid be going out? If not, what could this be, where to start? For my sake, please use poor man terms... I have read some of the other posts and I feel very...behind the 8 ball, if you will...ya know...post or email me...I need to fix it soon as my shoes will wear out quick otherwise...

Re: 97 ps shuts off going down road

The GPR only comes into effect when starting the truck. When you turn your key on does your Wait To Start light come on? If it does not check your number 22 maxi-fuse under the hood, it could be blown. If WTS light comes on and the truck cranks check your RPM guage when you are cranking. If it does not move it could be your Cam Position Sensor.

Re: 97 ps shuts off going down road

check all the big fuses under the hood... mine ran fine and the next day it wouldn't start, was like the fuel was cut off or something... found a blown fuse changed it and it fired right up.

Re: 97 ps shuts off going down road

Sounds like CPS failure, or as stated, unplug the fuel heater and see if the problem goes away.
Good luck,

CPS or the fuse 22 gets my vote.

Re: 97 ps shuts off going down road

It is a sensor on the front of the engine held on by a 10MM bolt that is sometimes cranky to remove. It has a connector on it. Look above your crankshaft pulley and you will spot it. Hope this helps.

Re: 97 ps shuts off going down road

Get it at International. 1/2 the price. Same sensor. Hint, always carry a spare. Most here do.

really the International one is half price? I'm going to have to check that out. Do you happen to know a part number?

How do I fix the CPS?

It is really very simple. I have searched and searched the archives and the current threads for the post that showed me how to do it, complete with pictures and everything. I hope somebody can find it for you, it makes it a very simple job, maybe ten minutes and I did not even raise the truck.

Same here saw a post a while back that had the part numbers from international a good how to description and a picture. You will save a couple hundred dollars doing it yourself and it's fairly easy. I changed mine in both my '97 and '03.

Re: 97 ps shuts off going down road

Mine did the same thing, I put in a new CPS 10k miles ago and no more problems. Look on ebay, I bought a genuine FoMoCo one for $55. They aren't hard to change. It is good to keep an extra one in the glove box. Good Luck
