97 tailgate

well i return from deployment and the ball and chain backed up into the corner of the house with the tailgate down. pretty much put a unfixable dent in the tailgate. so my question is, besides the dealer, does anyone know where i could find a new tailgate for a 1997 F-250? i cant find any 97s at the local junk yards. i dont like the other years, too much plastic trim.

thanks far any help, Bill

Hello everyone, long time 'lurker', limited poster. Just my own experience with an aftermarket tailgate. My '94 had one on it when I purchased the truck, manufacturer unknown. It was the worst POS I've ever seen. Thin gauge steel which actually dented around the latch after a few brisk shuts, no inner bracing, it could NOT support any weight including someone standing or sitting on it. I filled it with Great Stuff foam, which helped tremendously but even the pivot cups on the bottom eventually ailed and I had to weld new ones on.

yea don't wast your time with the aftermarket crap. I called my buddy at the dealer the other day for a tailgate. Just the shell was gonna run me $387.00 but I get a break on the parts. You can swap all your guts over and get it painted.
