ac question

Hello
I need to recharge my system after a total discharge. There is no vacuum present and has a zero charge. do i need to vacuum it out or can i just start adding 134a to it? Anyone know how much goes into these things? Thanks for the help!
Nate

The lines need to be under a vacuum before adding refrigerant. The refrigerant and any air do not mix well and any moisture makes things worse.

Unless you know what your doing, let a shop do it. You have to pull a vacuum on the system and make sure it doesnt leak. I did it all in my driveway but my dad is in HVAC-R (heating ventilation airconditioning refrigeration) so it wasnt challenging. Theres a bit of equipment needed. A scale, vacuum pump, gauges.

/\ /\ /\ What he said..If you have the equipment and know how much 134a goes into the system, there are sources for air driven vacum pumps and gauge sets. There is a formula for how much vacum you need to pull based on elevation and for how long for a complete evacuation of the system. If you lost any oil during the discharge, you will need to know how much and replace it. Easier to flush the system, replace the dryer/reciever and add 1/2 of the oil to the reciever and the other 1/2 to the compressor, then pull the vacum.

Yes you need to vacuum. My 1994 takes 32oz of freon. I used three full cans. That allowed for the fact that the manifold and cans retained a little bit of freon during the charge.
