Almost wish I had a 5 spd...

I bought this truck a few years ago, always thought it had a funny shift. 1-2 shift is fine, 2-3 has what seems like a half gear between the two 3-OD is fine. with truck locked out of OD, in 3rd at about 1900 r's I can tap the brake and the trans will shift back to the 'half-gear' and re-engage third immediately. I thought the brake tap would unlock TC on OD only? The trans runs fine and will tow fine with no hiccups. My concern is lately from the shift from my half-gear to third slams really hard once or twice a week or so under normal driving conditions, I've learned how to pedal around it. I as well as the PO (brother-in-law) have dropped the pan every 15-20k for new fluid and filter, I use motorcraft filter and fluid. I am easy on the truck as I'd liek to see 200+ out of the tranny. When I bought it i put on a transcommand, and took it off two hours later. I am the third owner so it's possible the original owner already put a shift kit in it, not sure.

my tranny does the same thing. i have the rebuild sheet from it and it says i have a shift kit in it. it only has about 20k on it and it seems like it has a half gear in between 3rd and OD. im not sure what it would be but it dont hit hard going into OD. now 1-2 and sometimes 2-3 hit really hard. im guessing its just the shift kit in the tranny. wish it didnt hit so hard but i have never had a problem with it so i just dont worry bout it. but you never know it may just be a problem.

I would expect that running in OD, but with OD locked out I am puzzled.. I thought overdrive IS the lockup of the torque converter

Overdrive is fourth gear...that half shift that you feel is the torque converter locking.

Overdrive is another gear as stated above. Any time you push the brake pedal, it is going to unlock the torque converter.
