Alternator maybe?

On my 96 250 I was driving the other day and notice that when I came to a stop the volt meter on the dash would dropand lights get dim..As I would go give it gas to take off it would raise up and lights get brighter. The battery light came on once but went out soon after.I am thinking maybe the alternator is going south but just want to check in here before I go and replace it.

Re: Alternator maybe?

Sounds like you may have it right. You can take it to any number of auto parts stores and they will test it for you if you wish.

Re: Alternator maybe?

I have the same ongoing issue, except, my problems included a slow spinning starter. I replaced the batts w/ the ones in my sig. I thought the batts were the problem for sure. It spins up like crazy now, but I still have the dimming headlights when the truck returns to idle, raise the rpm's and the lights brighten as normal. The alt still charges, according to the dvm, so Ill eventually get around to pulling the alt off and have it tested. Can you just buy and install the reg, or is it internal?

Re: Alternator maybe?

when you replace the reg and brush assm--look closely at the slip rings inside the alt--its what the brushes ride on--they get much of a groove in them--and new brushes wont last long---
