Back clatter engine sound

Hey guys , a buddy just gave me a 1997 F-350 SRW 4x4 , has a really bad sound like it's clattering sound , but only with no load on the motor , if your driving the truck under load it sounds fine , great oil presure , I thought it might have been a rod , it's got me stumped .
The diesel has 230k on the motor .
Thanks guys .

Pull the torque converter cover at the bottom of the bell housing and look up at the flex plate. They have a tendency to crack around the bolt holes, but it can be hard to see even if it is cracked.

Also check to see if the flex plate is wobbling allot. A little is normal.

If the Flex plate is broken, it can take out the whole tranny if is is not dealt with. Ask me how I know.

Does the truck have an unusual amount of vibration at idle?
