Bearings / UJoints

I was under my truck yesterday an noticed the u joints are shot on the front shaft. They seem okay on the rear shaft, but i noticed there is some up and down play where the shaft goes into the rear differential. Is this normal? If not, is it easily repaired?
Any info appreciated.

Sounds like the pinion seal and bearing are bad. Had the shop do mine, think it was about $300?
