Check engine light; how do I check codes?

I see lots of post about certain codes being checked. How do I check codes short of stopping by my local (greedy!) Ford dealer? Is there an instrument that I can buy? My check engine lite keeps coming on. I have a strong fuel smell and see fuel on my intake manifold vicinity of fuel filter. Will this cause the check engine lite to illuminate?
Thanks! Art

Re: Check engine light; how do I check codes?

best thign to do is find a guy local to you that has some more experience with these and a scanner, your fuel issue/leak will not cause a CEL so they are not related, a can of brake clean with fix teh fuel problem, then jsut trace the leak.

Re: Check engine light; how do I check codes?

Is there any software I can get for my laptop that will let me check codes?
longrthnu2, what is the "Edge Evolution Programmer"?
Nit, sounds like you're recommending that I clean allof the old fuel up with brake cleaner and then see where the fresh fuel is coming from... right?
Anybody in Eastern CT or RI that has a scanner? I'm buyin' lunch!

The best software program is AE and you need the Ford Enhanced bundle to work on Powerstrokes. Here is the best price at ITP

AE Scanner

And these tips too
