Ok, just finished up with my auto to manual conversion and I noticed that there is a clatter noise or kind of rattle noise comming from the transmission when it's in neutral and the clutch pedal is not engauged. If I push the clutch pedal in the noise goes away. Could my throw out bearing be making some noise? I also noticed that there is no spring or anything holding the throw out bearing in place other than the clutch fork. Is this right? There is tension on the clutch fork when the clutch is in its normal position, so that should mean that there is pressure on the throw out bearing.. Right??? I'm worried that this sound means that there is something wrong with my newly refurbished 5 speed. Any info on this would be great!!

I am gonna bet you put it in backwards if it is new or fairly new. Did you put a very thin coating of grease on the input shaft before installing it? If not that could make it chatter too.

Ok, I'm gonna be the first to admit that I did not no anything about this transmission swap before I started it, so it's very possible that I put something in wrong. No I did not use a thin coating of grease on the shaft, do I need to and if so how much and what kind? I'm pretty sure that I put it in correctly. The bearing is on one side and there is a black plastic housing on the other side. I put the black plastic toward the back of the transmission. This is what my clutch fork is hooked to. But the fork just sits on it, there really was not slot or anything that I could see that the fork should slide into. Does anyone have pictures as to the proper way to install these throwout bearings?

Oh and I almost forgot. The back of the throwout bearing on the plastic piece there are two troughs or plastic slits that are 180 deg opposite from each other. What are these for? Am I supposed to slide the clutch fork into these or something? I really need a good description or diagram on this set up to help me better understand if I did something wrong.... Thanks guys for all your future help!!!

OK. It sounds like you put the through out bearing in facing the right direction. You should use a high temp grease and put a very thin film on the input shaft and inside of the through out bearing and in the groove that the clutch fork sits in. The troughs that you are speaking of are the flats that the clutch fork is supposed to slide into. I hope that is how you put it together. That keeps the outer half of the throw out bearing from spinning on the shaft.

Did you put in a new clutch and single mass flywheel while you were at it, or did you install an old dual-mass flywheel. When a dual-mass flywheel goes bad they clatter. Can you hear the clatter just after you shut the truck off? If so, its most likely the flywheel?

Uhoh..... It looks like i'm gonna have to pull the clutch fork out.... I really did'nt see how the clutch fork attached to the troughs. I should be able to put some grease on the shaft at this point... I am assuming that I can hook the clutch fork back up to the throw out bearing correctly without having to pull the tranny right??? I might go to NAPA and see if they have a throw out bearing and clutch fork that I can look at in the store to see how they are supposed to hook togeather...

You should have two flat spots parallel to each other on the throw out bearing. One on either side of it. The clutch fork slips into those slots etc.. You should be able to reach up in there and put a little grease on the shaft. It would work best if you could have someone push in the clutch pedal which would expose more of the input shaft in order to grease it up better.
