Code reader for PS Diesel

Does anyone know of an affordable (less than $100) diagnostic trouble code reader that I could use on my 96 F250 w/ PSD? I was looking at the OBD2 readers for use on 96 and new vehicles, but realized that my truck is exempt from OBDII requirements and was told these readers would not work. I was told I would need a high end reader from the OEM to be able to read codes from the engine in this truck.

Thanks..

Re: Code reader for PS Diesel

96 is fully OBDII compliant. You want something that plugs into the port under the dash.

No, it is not. The valve cover has a sticker that reads "OBDII EXEMPT"
Cheaper code readers will physically plug in, but will not read codes on the 97 and older trucks.
Something like AutoEnginuity can be bought with the enhanced powertrain package for about 350 bucks and loads to a laptop. I have this and it works great. It also allows KOER and KOEO tests.

Re: Code reader for PS Diesel

Jerry, thanks for correcting that. I did not know that. I have also used a friends AutoEnginuity program and highly recommend it.

No problem. I just wanted to make sure no one went out and bought a reader that wouldn't work and couldn't be returned once opened.

They work on my '97. Should that read '96 and older maybe?

Re: Code reader for PS Diesel

Cheap ones do not work on mine. Only thing I have seen work is the snap-on versions.

Re: Code reader for PS Diesel

You need something with enhanced ford capability. Check out http://www.obd-2.com This is software only and will need a computer to run it. It comes with a usb adapter to plug into the port on your dash.

Re: Code reader for PS Diesel

Snowtow,
Is your truck a 49 state truck or a California truck. Cali's OBDII law required vehicles with a 14000 pound GVWR and under to be compliant, whereas the 49 state OBD is for 8500 pound and under.

Re: Code reader for PS Diesel

It's a 49 state, at 8800 GVWR. It is OBDII.

Re: Code reader for PS Diesel

On my valvecovers, it says OBDII Exempt. I'm looking into the autoingenuity software
