codes and shifting problems - Diesel Forum

Rebuilt trans has 10k on it. Had a regular rebuild with a hughes converter. While towing a 7k load uphill while doing 35 or so, the trans went to downshift into 2nd and free reved. No 2nd gear on a hill. On flat ground everything seemed fine. Later on the next day it went to limp mode shifting real hard on the way back home with a blinking od light. Trans was running around 180 degree's. The pulled codes were tc slip, idm fault, cps fault and vss fault. The truck runs great. I had a superchip in for the 2nd day on this tow. Everything seemed fine before hand. Where do i start? I hate to start with the cheapest sensor till its fixed. Any suggestions?

Same happened to me. It turned out that the TC was cooked. Get it checked before it cooks the whole tranny. Good luck. TP

and of course, its at the trans shop and everythings fine! I'd be bummed if it was the tc. Specially since I paid for a good one so this didnt happen.
Which tc did you go with?

mine just did the same thing today. does the speedometer work?had the VSS and CPS codes also. the VSS going bad or not working will make the trans get hot and TC slip. mine was just a blown fuse(LUCKY me). does your dome light work?i know your thinking whats that got to do with it. the fuse that was blown was not anything to do with the speedo or PCM but was #9(i think)which is the dome light fuse. hope you get out easy. My speedo does bounce 5mph or so. I replaced the vss before and it did nothing. I changed the cluster, did nothing. So i just didnt use cruise and dealt with it. The dome light works with the passenger door but not the drivers (sep prob?) I have a temp guage for the trans, it got to 210 while towing thru a long city in hot stop n go. Other than that it was freeway and around 180.
