Considering repainting- looking for ideas and PICS!
Well, my '95 is showing its first sign of rust on the super cab rocker panel with only 138K. Obviously, the truck has a lot of motor life. Many are telling tme to sell while I can, but I love my 'ol PSD. I just put in another Brian's tranny, new wheels and tires, and baby swamps---so there's no way I could part with it now...
I'm thinking of having the body work done and getting the truck repainted. I was thinking the Platinum Super Duty paint job would look good. Any thoughts?
Have you guys gone back with a more modern looking paint scheme? Maybe something unusual? I'm looking for ideas here.
Re: Considering repainting- looking for ideas and PICS!
I know how you feel. I just spent six hours today sanding, filing (ya there was enough I had to file) and painting my flatbed. I still didn't get all the rust.

Re: Considering repainting- looking for ideas and PICS!
Nothing looks better IMO than a factory color for the year of the truck.
In our years I love the two tone red on grey. I just think it is the best color scheme out there. What ever you do don't go and do a odd paint concept. What ever is in style now will go out long before you sell, and it will leave you with a lower value and a odd looking truck.

Re: Considering repainting- looking for ideas and PICS!
Maybe you're all right...I keep thinking that Super Duty Platinum paint job would look good on our body style truck... or possibly just using the more modern two tone where the lower third of the body is the accent opposed to the middle section...
I just haven't seen any pics of our trucks painted that way???
Re: Considering repainting- looking for ideas and PICS!
I've thought alot about this too, as my recently purchased '97 has a backyard factory color that don't shine paintjob....
I've thought about the 1/3 2/3 color scheme like the eddie bauer trucks had on them, that way if you need to repaint later in the typical rust spots, you don't have to worry about matching the entire truck, you can just repaint under that bottom body line.
I've read a lot of articles in hotrod type magazines about this.
I think the most common sense bang for the buck way to handle a paint job unless you have spraying experience and a place to spray, is to do all the trim removal, and as much prep work as possible, then take it somewhere that has a booth to have it sprayed. Some guys have brought theirs to maaco with really good results.
Like anything the prep work is the time consuming and expensive part.
If you pull all the trim, grille, headlights, door handles mirrors, etc, and you do the sanding, or even the rust repair and fil / prime work if you have the means, then they can just put the final primer coat and paint on, and you get a paint booth perfect finish for a real bargain.
I've seen lots of good results from backyard jobs too, but, there's a good deal of chemistry involved, and luck, and hassle, if you're painting in your garage you need to build a booth out of hanging plastic from your rafters, put in fans with furnace filters coming and going, then deal with the neighbors about the smell.... and, you need to know how to spray to keep from getting orange peel, runs, drips, or even metallic runs.
Yea, I just rambled too much, been thinking about this for years.

Show me a factory finish that does not have a run somewhere around a headlight bezel or orange peal. GM and Ford can't paint anthing without orange peal. For a long time I thought it was part of the metalic finish

Re: Considering repainting- looking for ideas and PICS!
true, but, well, you know how hard you can be on yourself when something doesn't come out how you want it.
Paint isn't cheap either, so, learning by doing is a bit less attractive.
I still hope to learn by doing, but I'm starting with solid paint (cheaper) and equipment enamel (cheaper yet) on things like my forklift, trailer, equipment cabinets, and the like.
The other significant investment involved is a good paint gun.
I got a quote of $500 to paint a vehicle I prepped with a single stage enamel in a booth, and baked on at maaco.
A good paint gun is $350 plus, and good paint starts at $80 a gallon and goes WAY up from there, not to mention the primer....

Re: Considering repainting- looking for ideas and PICS!
I thought about taking the truck to Maaco and then giving them the paint to use so that I don't get something that will fade away ina month of sun...
I have a quote from a local guy that does an extremely good job for $4K Now that's him doing all the work. I'm sure that would come down quite a bit if I did some of the prep like you mentioned. I know that figure seems nuts, but when I look at the fact that my truck (like many of yours) is chaulked full of new and upgraded parts, I think it actually makes sense to spend the money opposed to buying a used SD with 80K miles for the money plus a few $K that I would get for my truck...
Still looking for some pics of our truck with the 1/3 paint...any out there?
Thanks for the feedback guys!

Re: Considering repainting- looking for ideas and PICS!
Maybe it's just me, but I can't ever remember seeing a repaint that looks that great. All seem to rapidly fade, peal or otherwise turn bad in a short time sitting in the weather. I'm not going to ever repaint anything. Just me probably,

Re: Considering repainting- looking for ideas and PICS!
Fix up the rust problem areas the best you can and then have the truck oiled. Some places do this by spraying hot oil on the underside of the truck, stop existing rust and prevents new rust. If you cant find somewhere to do it,,, do it yourself.

Re: Considering repainting- looking for ideas and PICS!
That's great advice.
After talking it over with the painter, who's actually an honest guy, we decided that he could fix the one rust spot and just buff hte rest of the truck. He said that I would be a fool to paint it and that the scratches were just in the clear. He also mentioned that it would help a lot to just replace the all the lights with new ones since the OEMs have all yellowed, faded, or become dull........I guess I was just focusing on all the little problems and not seeing a pretty solid foundation of a truck...
After he pointed that out, I'm thinking the truck will look pretty nice when he's done. THanks for all your input! I'm going to do the rust proofing for sure. I want this truck to last!
Re: Considering repainting- looking for ideas and PICS!
You may also consider a product called POR15. this stuff is the auto restorer's answer to prayers.
I'm considering coating the whole underside of my truck, tho that will be pricey. I for sure am going to cover the problem areas (over the wheel wheels, cab corners, etc, from underneath, and maybe even from inside the cab if I get really ambitious.
Basically this stuff bonds to rust and seals it out.
Lots of hot rodders swear by the stuff.
My truck came from Georgia, and though it doesn't shine like a new one, it will! and with no rust, I want to keep it that way.
the war is on! (me vs the rust that is)
Good luck, sounds like you've come to a good conclusion.
As for all repaints not turning out well. That's just not true, bad prep jobs with cheap paint, sure. I know guys driving vehicles for years with jobs they did themselves that still look great... but, you have to spend the money on good paint, primer, and take your time.
