Hey guys, I posted about some transmission troubles a couple weeks back.
I have a 96 f250 4x4 and I believe the E40D is saying good bye, its a Jasper rebuild with 180,000 miles on it. Sadly I only owned it for 10-12K miles. I use the truck for my lawn care company and I might be using it for plowing, but also I do alot of driving since it is my daily driven truck. At this point, I don't want to spend 3000 dollars on a new trans and theres other stuff needed, including the engine burning alil white smoke when I get on it (only uses half a quart of oil in 3000miles but still smokes a hair when you get on it..IE WOT for 10 seconds). So I'm seriously thinking of getting rid of the truck after only owning it a year and a half, but I do like the the truck and the fact that I have so much money in upgrades already.
So I was wondering, has anyone ever swapped their automatic trans to a manual trans? What would be needed other then the already comnonly known things (trans, linkage, peddle assembly, probably crossmember)? Would a new computer be needed? Any help on this would be great. Winter is comming and this would be a nice lil project to do for a couple weeks, I know of a junkyard that has stick truck that had a psd in it, the trans is gone but I might be able to salvage the peddle assembly. Basicly looking at, I dont want to spend 3000 on an automatic, and if its cheaper to go with manual then I'd be up for it.
well the pedal assy you can get out of any f-series truck so that's not a concern.
Find your transmission, factor in about 1k for a good SMFW & clutch, then you'll need slave cyl, clutch fork, master cyl. and then you will need to modify your driveshafts.
I think you're going to find that swapping trans comes out to about the same if not more than fixing the one you have.

I think after it is all said and done unless you know someone in a wrecking yard willing to cut you a deal it will cost about the same. Your tranny shouldnt cost you 3k. I spent 2300 on mine and that included billet converter and other h/d mods as well as a big cooler.

and...
Sold to Dad... Might buy it back someday I love this truck - 93, 7.3 Non Turbo 300,000+ miles replaced E40D at 287k miles, also just a stock truck, Run about 450+ Gallons of straight WMO, now back on diesel
I purchsed my 97 F-250 (Now an F-350 after 60 swap) because I bought it right. I did not care for the E40D when I purchased it.
I desperately want a manual box and do not mind paying extra to achieve. And besides that, some degenerative redneck made the mistake of telling me that I could not do it.
My only concern is the electronic end of the equation. Will I have to fabricate a loop in the transmission wiring harness to fool my computer or can it simply be unplugged?
I would really like a ZF6 given its lower final OD ration an lower crawl ratio.
