I'll try not to make this too long. My son has a 95PS. We bought it from a friend who bought it used with about 9K on it. He had engine and tranny problems, so at some point the local Ford dealer installed a new 97 engine and tranny. The new engine has less than 80K on it. Occasionally slowing down for a stop sign the truck dies. It fires right back up. My son is in the SEABEES stationed in Calif. so doesn't have a lot of money to throw at the problem. On the older powerstrokes if the CPS acts up will it set a code? If it was a newer one like mine that would be the 1st thing I'd look at. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance

Mine was doing the same thing when I bought it, 3 years and 30k miles ago. I replaced the CPS and never had another problem until last week. Now my truck is doing it again. I have a Superchips tuner that I can read codes with and the truck is setting a code for the CPS (but no CEL). I couldn't read the codes the first time I had the problem, so I can't tell you if it was seeting a code the first time or not.
I'd say it is most likely the CPS.
If you want to save money buy the new one from an International dealer and not a Ford dealer. It should be about half the price (~$100 instead of ~$200) Also, with the engine swap I would recommend that you get the engine serial number and take it with you there are different CPS's depending on what SN range your engine falls into.

DGLENN. Yes I would go to International. I've not spent much time in this forum. Would I be correct in thinking that Ford did some engine changes between the 95 and 96 model years?

I'm no expert on the subject, but I'll just re-post something I have filed away from a long ago post I read.
§ The CMP sensor has also been changed to incorporate gold plated pins. There has also been changes in length and circuitry since 1994. To identify each CMP sensor there is a part number suffix located on the top of the sensor near the sensor wiring connector. The CMP with a part number suffix of C96 is 1.152" ± 0.006" in length and has tin pins, this sensor was used in engines with serial number between 000501 and 033780. A C96 sensor should not be installed as a replacement sensor. The sensor with a C97 suffix is tin plated and 1.152" ± 0.006" in length. This sensor has improved circuitry over the C96 sensor. The C98 sensor is identical to the C97 except for the length, it is 1.142" ± 0.004" in length.
§ Due to the change in wiring harnesses three new sensors were made with gold pins. The C91 sensor is 1.152" ± 0.006" in length, which was used in engine serial numbers 375549 through 408253, and the C92 is 1.142" ± 0.004" in length, which was used in engine serial numbers 408253 through 623916. A sensor with a part number suffix of C93 has gold pins and a length of 1.142" ± 0.004", this sensor has improved circuitry over the C91 and C92 sensors. The C93 sensor is being used as of engine serial number 623916.
§ The camshaft position sensor circuitry has been updated to be less sensitive of clearance to the trigger wheel.
§ The part number suffix for the gold plated sensor is C93, and C99 for the tin plated sensor.

I just had the same problem with my '95 model. Ordered a new CPS (OEM) from powerstrokeshop.com (a sponsor of this website) for $86.45 + shipping. Now it's running perfectly again.
