I'm not sure, but I think there are two paths from the pump, one up to the reservoir and the other goes to the main, so I think you would still have oil at the header, but just not to the reservoir if the valve was bad? but I'm not positive,

here's a thread,

No Oil from Lube Pump Need Help

search his user name to find his other posts, looks like his pictures in his sig are still good(I had to search back and find his thread)

There are two paths: Inlet and outlet ports are through the front cover. Initial start supply is through a passage in the cc which contains the anti-drain check. The other supply is a continuous feed from the left bank tappet gallery up through the front cover and discharges near the top of the hpor.

'96 a drain check was moved from the hpop to the front cover.

DE AERATION VALVE. Is this what you are talking about?

The valve is located inside the cam cover or engine front cover.
Be sure you have one:

Engines built with serial number 201681 through 375549 are equipped with the de-aeration valve.
Engines beginning with serial number 375550 were redesigned and did not incorporate the valve.

Look here for some pics.

thanks very much for the pics. Would this valve prevent oil from getting to the oil filter?

Man, you guys have been busy...

Just got in from snuggin up my front wheel bearings. Also had a scrapping sound when rotating one wheel. Found the anti raddle spring was actually touching the rotor. A little side bending with some rather large channel locks fixed that.

Ata boy Rob...

So ya found the hole. That's great. I assume you had to pull the engine to get at that. Was hoping you wouldn't have to go that far. Oh well. At least you may not need a rebuilt.

Can't wait to hear if you get some pressure after you put it back where it belongs.

Speakin of which, What's the proper means of keeping that valve from backin out of there? lock tight, duct tape, bailin wire...?

my dad suggested a ball peen hammer and a punch to crimp the side together.... i just used some locktite the motor is back in the truck and now i just need to reconnect the transmission, driveshaft, fuel lines, ac lines, electircal, radiator, fan, and put the hpop reservoir back on top. then refill the oil, antifreeze, powersteering fluid, and tranny fluid. I will not stop until the truck is ready to hit the road... ( I am a very motivated person so it might be a late night)
