electronics wizards! please xplain if you can.

i lost my cb antenna the other day so i went to radio shack and bought a new one. it is a thru glass type and mounted it on my drivers side rear windo. the cb is located in my center console and the wiring for the antenna goes out under my drivers seat and heads directly to the rear side glass. heres the problem. when i key the mic, my truck rpms drop gradually as i hold the mic keyed. if i hold for about 15 secvonds, the truck will either die or the rpms return to normal. when i release the mic, the engine stumbles and will either quit or regain consciousness and carry on as tho nothing ever happened. the RX meter never goes above 2 but with the old antenna it would go to 5. if i unplugg the antenna, nothing happens. the wiring is not pinched and does not go anywhere near the computer. where is this interference coming from. any help or insite will be greatly apreciated.

Wow! I had that problem once in my Jeep after I installed a Holley throttle body injection system. When I keyed the mike it would cut out the CPU. I read later in the manual that the CB had to be a certain distqance from the CPU. Wierd though if you ran everything the same as the old antennae.

Re: electronics wizards! please xplain if you can.

well, the old ant wiring was different. it headed out forwards as the ant was mounted on my front bumper. it must be related to the style of antenna and i guess the obvious fix is to buy yet another. but im still stumped and would love to know why its occuring.

Re: electronics wizards! please xplain if you can.

did you check the frequency that antena operates at it could be the wrong band and that would easily disrupt the cpu

Re: electronics wizards! please xplain if you can.

Did you check the SWR on the new antenna? I would bet the SWR is extremely high. When the SWR is high the the feed line radiates and in your case will be getting Radio Frequency (RF) power into all of the trucks wiring. RF energy in the PCM can do all sorts of strange things.

If The SWR is high first make sure the transducer on the inside of the glass is positioned correctly in relation to the antenna on the outside. If it is try tuning the antenna for an SWR of less tha 2:1, the lower the better. If you have a low SWR and still have the problem try moving the antenna to the very top of the window. It may be that the window mount antenna is radiating back into the cab, too much. It is also possible that if your truck has a metallized window tint that the tint will foul up the glass mount antenna. If it was mine I'd get rid of the through glass antenna.

These are just some thoughts but I have seen many strange RF interference problems and have fixed many as well.

Re: electronics wizards! please xplain if you can.

well thanks for the info larry. i have no idea what the swr is but i thinking that the antenna was crap and should just likely replace it. i do have that shiny tint on the rear side glass so you ve prolly hit the nail on the head. thnks for the insight. it makes sense.
