Engine cutting out at various times...

Hey guys...I'm a new member, but have been reading the forums since buying my first PS back in December. I've already learned a lot....
hope someone can help me out here. My truck has developed a situation where it will cut off at various times. By cutting off, I mean it will die for a second and then keep right on running if I'm going down the road, but if it's idling at the time, it will just die. It will start right back up and run OK afterwards. Sometimes it will do it several times on a short trip, then sometimes I can drive half a day without it happening. I've noticed a drip (leak) from the short hose between the pump and housing, which is causing fuel in the valley. Could this be the cause? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Re: Engine cutting out at various times...

i am thinking more cps than fuel shortage unless you got some serious flood going on in the valley. when you can... please post some pics of your truck and the body lift. i am interested....... good luck

Re: Engine cutting out at various times...

Welcome to the site!

Very likely your CPS is going bad, around $100 from international. It's a good part to have a spare of so if it turns out thats not it, you'll have a spare. If you look up under the front of the engine, it's just above the crank pully towards the passenger side with wires going to it. 10mm bolt and pull it forward to remove. There is a number on it International may want to match for the new one.

Another possibility is the fuel heater broken and shorting. Hard to see, the connector is on the fuel filter housing, drivers side, upper of two connectors, FPR is above it in the way. You can unplug it and run without it awhile to see if that fixes the problem. You really don't need it unless you're running #2 diesel in very cold temps without additive.

Re: Engine cutting out at various times...

Your problem is DEFINITELY your CPS!!! I had the exact same symptoms/problem with mine...replaced the CPS 2 days ago and it's been perfect so far.

Re: Engine cutting out at various times...

Thanks guys.....I just talked with a friend (who drives a PS) who suggested the CPS, also. I thought about that first, but figured the engine would just quit and not restart if it went bad. I've seen CPS's on eBay pretty reasonable. Would I be safe buying one on there, as long as I matched the #'s correctly? Thanks again!!

I'll try to get some pics posted later this week. The lift looks good, but I had to raise the bumpers to make it look OK, which was a little bit of trouble...........

Re: Engine cutting out at various times...

Go to Powerstrokeshop.com....I am in business(auto restoration/hot rodding) and get 15% over dealer cost and it is still $10 more than he sells them for.....I would have ordered mine from him but I got it next day from my dealer and it worked out about the same as there since there would be shipping. I would go there rather than Ebay...support the dealers that support the Powerstroke owners...that way they will still be around in 10 years when you need them again

I just logged-on to ask if anybody had bought a CPS from Powerstrokeshop.com.......I guess you knew I was gonna ask, huh? I've called all the local parts houses, and he's about HALF their price, plus they were gonna have to order one anyway. Thanks, again..........

Re: Engine cutting out at various times...

Before going out and buying a CPS, Check your Relays under the hood
for the Computers...I had the same thing your going thru, come to a stop light and the truck dies, fires right back up, then drive a little longer and the truck dies..etc etc..
I went and changed the CPS, disconnected the fuel heater and still
had the problems, until i changed the relays to the computer..
