Extreme low power on cold start up.

I read a thread here on the cause of this problem, now I cannot find it. Sorry for the repost. The engine when started cold, on those mornings when I have a trailer and cannot get up to the garage to plug it in, will not even rev up for a minute or so. Starts good with just the glow plugs, but foot flat on the floor will not move for a minute or so. Then it is really doggy for a couple minutes. If my foggy memory recalls someone questioned the workings of an exhaust valve?

Re: Extreme low power on cold start up.

It sure could be your exhaust backpressure valve. To find out, just unplug it. The plug is located by the turbo pedistal, on the right side as you face the rear of the truck. I have had mine unpluged for several years because of constant problems with it,and even in very cold weather I haven't noticed any adverse effects. Pete

Re: Extreme low power on cold start up.

Just remember how thick the cold oil is and how hard it is to move through the injectors and oil system. When the EBPV is activeated, it is only fully on under partial throttle under light load. At least it is like that on my PSD. It opens up a bit when you floor it. Just give it some time before you hammer down. I live in the cold and it is just something we need to be patient with. Let it warm up for a few minutes and it will be OK. That is what I do and it works for me.
