glow plug solenoid again

I noticed hard starting and no voltage drop when plugs were supposed to be firing. Checked the solenoid and the terminal was just wiggling around. So went advance got new one. put on and still nothing. I switched the two small wires and the gp's wont cut off.I always thought that it didnt matter where the wires went other than little/big. while i was fooling with it i took the mounting nuts off and noticed that when i would let the metal mounting plate on bottom of solenoid touch metal the relay would kick on. doesnt work one way and wont stop working the other. please help, I need this truck to fire off without being plugged in , Its a farm truck.

It sounds like they gave you the wrong relay. You need a case isolated one and the one that you have sounds like it is a case grounded one. I believe that there have been a couple of other threads about relays from Advance that wouldn't work or worked the way that yours is doing. NAPA has a GPR109 that will work for around $30.00. I along with a few others have gone with the Stancor 586-902. It is a heavy duty industrial relay that seams to hold up really well. There are a number of places that you can pick one up but I got mine from HERE. Or Google it and you should be able to find somewhere a little cheaper.

I just spent several hours looking for the stancor, at the best price. The cheapest I found it was here.

You can dig through Google more if you like.

If you still have problems, I went to a Ford dealer and purchase a motorcraft one for my truck and never had a problem, first I got an aftermarket one from an autoparts store and had problem with it, went through 3 of them, and then went to Ford. No problems now, good luck.
Paul.

Does it matter which wire go to which lug? Other than small wire to small lug and large wire to large? I bought the Stancor and don't want to cross the wires. Also, how did you mount your relay?

Just connect it up there is no way to cross the wires. As far as mounting I made a bracket that bolted to the exsisting GPR mount and then mounted the Stancor to it, but then I enjoy doing that type of thing and it really isn't necessary. Just mount it with one bolt if that is all that you can get in.
