Glow plugs

I just read, on this forum, that if you leave your glow plugs on they can melt!!! I generally don't leave them on but in the winter I've cycled them a few times just to warm things up. I've even left them on two different occassion two see the volts change on my guage indicating things are working. I'm wondering now if I could have melted these things. I've never had any problem and I've never checked them since I bought the truck last October. Just a little nervous now that I've read some melt in 10-20 seconds. Do they melt that quickly and should I take them out to see if they are damaged? Or leave things alone until they show signs of not working then evaluate for possible damage?

The glow plugs come on and stay on for 2 minutes. They are controlled by the PCM. If you start your truck and the glowplugs come on (a 95 like mine comes on every time hot or cold) they are on for ~2 minutes. I suppose that when they short out they burnout quickly, but that is a result of failure, not the cause.

The computer controls the on time so you would have to cycle the keys quit a lot of times to melt the tips. What happens is the tip will mushroom and the it won't fit out the hole to replace them.I have only seen this once and the owner was cycling the key 5-10 times when he went to start it because the truck had a few bad plugs. He was doing this over a coarse of seven months. When I went to replace the glow plugs two were mushroomed .It took me over an hour to do those two because I had to twist them back and forth being careful not to snap them off.
