Glow Plugs deactivated in summer. Do you get clouds of white smoke?
I notice that if I don't have the Glow Plug relay plugged in I get huge clouds of white smoke. If it's really hot maybe not as bad and if the engine is already warmed up (plugged in or been running) no smoke at all. The engine runs great. Just a cold start up even on a warm day 80F or so, it'll white smoke like crazy and I can smell lots of unburnt Diesel. Is this the norm?

These engines need glowplugs to start when cold- even in warm weather. If you don't use them you will get white smoke (unburned fuel) until the cylinder temps get up.

That's what I was guessing. If I plug 'em back in, no smoking. It'll start ok with no GP's but it smokes like crazy and I can smell the unburnt raw diesel.
The engine has almost 400k and I'm not sure on the blowby. I need to check it out when I get some time. It doesn't seem to burn any oil.

Yea, getting that many miles...glow plugs help. Low milage they are not really that affected by this. Blowby will indicate cylinder wear. It could just also be worn out injectors/o-rings. I have a 96 F250 with +600k miles and it is in desperate NEED of a lot of replacement parts.

Mines got just under 100K and even on semi chilly days will drop a load of smoke on start up. Sounds pretty normal to me with that many miles on the clock.

When my GPR was shot a couple years ago, it took massive amounts of cranking to get the truck to start. The parking lot looked like the burn out area at the drag strip when the truck finally started. In other words, no glow plugs= tons of white smoke.
Haha yea, coach told me he wanted me to come fog his house for mosquitos. But that was in winter. Never had that problem until 400k miles. Extended cranks will also cause puffs of fuel smoke.

My problem was around 200k. But then again, it was only a problem because of the GPR being bad. Never had issues with my engine, just the **** bolted to it. Lucky so far at 229K.
