tired of getting stuck in wet fields!!! ive used the search engine on the site and still am a little confused... my truck (1997 f250 psd) has a 4:10 regular axle, or at least it says so on my invoice.. my question is, what exactly do i need to make this thing have traction? can i buy a new clutch kit? do i need to buy a locker? and what the hell is a "regular axle"? and btw, i do snow removal with this vehicle.....
thanks alot
mailman
Mine is a limited slip. This is code for "you wasted your money". Dont bother with a LS they just dont work. Better tires would be your best bet. You could put a luch box locker in easy but I'm not sure you would like that in the snow. RB

mailman -- A "regular" axle is a non-limited-slip axle. Short of spending money on a locker or clutch packs to resolve your traction issues, maybe different tires would help? Just a thought. Most of my traction issues in the past were tire-related (mostly due to tread wear).
Cheers from Claremore, OK!

thanks for the fast replies!!!! my tires have less then 8,000 miles on them.. they are MASTERCRAFT AT'S.... they look almost brand new... i had a real hard time getting up one of the hills in a subdivision that i plow...want to fix that problem while the weathers still nice..... dont really like coming down backwards while the front right tire and back left are spinning at 40mph!!!!!
Well if you want to spend the cash you could put in air lockers in both axles so that you have full four wheel when you need it and open differentials when you dont.

For the price of it I would just put 500-1000 pounds of something in the bed. You would be surprised at where you can go with that much weight in the truck.

Right to the fuel station..... j/k

The truck won't even notice a thousand pounds in the bed and the mileage will not be reduced enough to even tell. You'll already drop your mpg's by going to winter fuel.
From the sounds of things you will probably wanting to go with some sort of locking axles OX or ARB from what I hear the automatic kind (detroit lockers) don't work real good on snow/ice and from my experience with LS axles might as well not even have them either. I have decided I want lockers on my rig but money just got tight the last few months so at 900 a pop guess I will have to wait.

That reminds me of when my truck was new in 1997. I was parked on the grass at a local watering hole, it rained while we were inside "testing beverage temperatures". When I was leaving some of my fellow "inspectors" came out to check out my new truck. I was bragging how this thing would probably go anywhere hauling anything! I hopped up in the cab, started it up and exclaimed "Listen ti THAT!", I put her in first gear, released the clutch and spun tires without moving an inch. The howling and laughing even made me smile as I got out to lock my hubs. I STILL hear about that! After I wore those original Generals (junk) I went to more agressive treads.
On that note stay away from Dunlops. I had a set, I had a rear blowout hauling a trailer in the mountains one week, then the next week I found a bulge on the front. I removed the front wheel and threw it in the back. It exploded a few days later just sitting there! After the THIRD tire blew I contacted Dunlop. They sent me one of the usual form letters that companies send to get out of standing behind their products, you know the ones..."After the 1st 3 months or 3/32ths of tread wear, blah, blah, blah...".
I wouldn't put Dunlops on my lawn mower! I even switched out my Harley tires from Dunlops (Which I always ran) to Avons (WOW! what a differance!).

when im plowing, i generally have about 40ish 50lb bags of salt or urea in the bed.. im a member of plowsite.com and one of their members said to try to back up the problem hill.... i think i'll try that this year and see how it goes...
