How and why does a diesel backfire?

Mine backfired this morning. Scared me about into a heart attack, and neighbors were walking out of there houses looking.

Did it trying to start. It did not catch the first attempt, so I cycled again and cranked and POW (like a gun shot) and idle smoothly.

Did some diesel start to burn, but burnt slow so the exhaust valve was open when it finally burnt?

Re: How and why does a diesel backfire?

Did it back fire out of the exhaust?? or out of the intake? I've had mine back fire out the intake before. I tried to start it but the GPR was bad...next try the GPR made, plugs got hot and BANG...gave me a case of the "Wide Eyes" and creased seat cover. I've never heard one backfiring through the exhaust yet.

Re: How and why does a diesel backfire?

Not sure if it was from the intake or exhaust. I was standing outside the truck with my head inside. It sounded like it came from the tail pipe?

Why would it fire out the intake?

Re: How and why does a diesel backfire?

When it is cold, mine tends to do that quite a bit because I have had to cycle my glow plugs more than once. When this happens, I am trying to crank the truck up, doesn't start, turn key off, back on, and while i am giving the GP's more time to heat, it will produce a sound just short of a sonic boom. It seems to me that the cylinders have filled with raw diesel, then as the GP's get hot, they light the raw fuel off causing the boom. At least that is my theory anyway. And in my case, it seems to be coming out of the tailpipe...and the up pipes since I have a leak up there anyway!!

Re: How and why does a diesel backfire?

it is because you guys insist on cycling the plugs, you wait until teh plugs shut off, pump raw fuel in an unheated cyl. , if you let the plugs cycle all you did was heat the air in the cyl. which goes right out the exhaust when you turn it over, that is why it doesn't start well. Try it thsi way, turn key on, put seatbelt on, count to 10 and turn it over TIL it STARTS, thsi way the GPs are still turned on and hot which lights up the fuel.
GPs are NOT there to heat the cyl, they are there to assist lighting off the compressed fuel/air mix before the cyl warms up. Dodge have a heater plate in the intake to heat teh AIR, some Perkins have a GP in the intake tract to again heat the AIR.
If your unit will not start as be the method above then yout GPR and or GP are weak or failing, it really is that simple.

Re: How and why does a diesel backfire?

Yeah I had mine do the same thing once when I was having trouble with the GPR, it lit off a cylinder and though it wasn't loud it gave the engine a big jump. I guess yours must have happened when a valve was open so then it banged out either the intake or exhaust.

Re: How and why does a diesel backfire?

I really like this post for information and have to say that BigRedCCDually had me LMAO with his "creased my seat cover" comment. I am still giggling.
