lock out hubs

I have a 1996 f-350 axle, and one of my lock outs went bad. Ford wants $180 for one hub. I can get a set of warn lock outs for $190. any input is appreciated on what brand or good places to buy.
Thanks
Justin

Re: lock out hubs

Justin,
I think Warn makes a good hub, but I think Ford hubs are made by Warn. I could be wrong, but I believe I read that somewhere

Re: lock out hubs

The ford hubs are junk, I went through one the first couple of days i had the truck. I've been very happy with my warns. Plus ford makes theirs out of plastic, warn makes theirs out of metal. I bought mine from 4 wheel parts.

Re: lock out hubs

Yes I believe the manual ford lockouts ARE made by Warn, and as I understand it, they are pretty strong too. The knob is plastic but I dont think that affects the way it locks?

Never had a problem with mine...

Warn makes a very good hub, had them on my last truck, never a problem. I would replace with warn.

Godd Luck,
Casey

My factory Ford hubs are metal. I would not call them junk considering the severe (major understatement) abuse and mileage I have on mine. I dont think the Ford hubs are made by Warn as all Warn hubs I have or have used are a full 360* turn to lock. Ford is 1/4 turn. Interestingly Superwinch hubs are also 1/4 turn and very similar.

The only Ford hub I've heard was junk is the auto lock. Everyone I know who had them replaced with the Ford manual lock had no problems thereafter. Sounds like you had a defective or poorly installed hub.

Re: lock out hubs

Hum, i had some ford hub that had a plastic red turney thing, and it started to fall apart. I was told it was from ford, maybe they had a cheap version and an expensive version.

Re: lock out hubs

Ford hubs ARE made my Warn. They are Warn's lower line. Warn's lower line are 1/4 turn with plastic knob. The Warn Premuim hubs are 9/10's turn and are all metal. Incidentally, I pretty sure that you can only get the premuims for our application.

OK, good info. I never knew Warn had a lower line. Personally I like the 1/4 turn. I replaced the hubs on one of my Jeeps that had the factory jeep lockouts, and the only hubs available were the 1/4 turn Superwinch. I like them a lot better than the Warns on my other Jeeps and they have held up just as well.

I won't go into a lot of detail, but the factory Ford hubs have held up to the driving required in the high CO Rockies getting into and out of remote job sites year round (read deep snow and mud and steep driveways) towing heavy loads of material and equipment and recovery duties for the past 4 years without a hitch. Of the 230,000 on the truck I bet 75,000 were with the hubs locked. If there was a way to break them I would have found it. I serviced them when redoing the WB's and they showed no sign of wear. My only complaint is the stupid snap ring .

Re: lock out hubs

a bit of off 4X4ing while pulling a load. Apparently it was about to fail. I also think the warns look better on the truck.

Re: lock out hubs

Can anyone tell me if the standard warn lockouts have the lifetime warranty, or if it's just the premium warn lockouts?
Thanks for all the input

Re: lock out hubs

Justin,

I would go with the Warn Hubs, they are the best I think I love mine, I got mine from 4 Wheel Parts for about $175. I hated my automatic locking hubs, nice to not get out of the truck but just dont have that truely locked feel.

Good Luck,

Tyler

Re: lock out hubs

Justin,

I imagine the F350 and F250 hubs are different, but regardless, I would go with the Warn if one or both are bad. Ford's may not be the "top of the line", but they do/did function for the incidental use they were designed to take. Regardless of brand you choose, your better selection will be the aftermarket than the dealership for both quality and price. Another reason most goto International for parts....
