A few months ago, I bought a Luber-Finer FF830 (L4595F) from Autozone. I got it home and the threads didn't match my fuel bowl. I took it back and went to Advance Auto and found the correct threads. Well tonight after my fuel bowl o-ring replacement, I forgot and bought a Luber-Finer again. Same issue.
Has anyone else seen this? You would think I'm not the only one. Mines a 97 and I've double checked the part number several times. It shows the same part for all PS 7.3's. The Advance version I got last time has the correct threads.
What fuel filter system do you have that the filter threads on? Are you talking about the filter cap for the bowl?

Stock system and yes, the filter on the stock fuel bowl. It's the filter that comes with the lid. The Advance one I got that worked, the lid was made on the filter cartridge. This one's 2 pieces and I don't have a spare lid.
Oh OK. Now I got ya. That is weird that the one doesn't fit. I have never seen that before and we had a large fleet of PSD7.3 trucks. I could only speculate that they were manufactured wrong or they are mislabeled. Could it possibly be the filter assembly for the 99-03 trucks?

Are you saying the Luber-Finer is two pieces? You might be able to take the filter element off the lid that does not work and match it with the one that does. Generally on the filters that come with lids, the lid only serves to hold the filter down in place anyway and you can seperate the filter from the lid without much trouble. I tried to cross the filter number myself and come up with the same Luber-Finer number as you have.
The Luber-Liner is 2 pieces. The Advance Auto is one piece (existing one I have) so I can't use the lid of the current one. I beat the used Advance Auto filter with a hammer to see how the filters attached, it's flared on.
Good point. I also have a 2000 7.3 Excursion I could check against.

Hey Fellers, I saw this post when looking for comments to a slightly similar problem I am having. My truck is a 96 model with 200k on it; I've owned it since 2001, and I change the diesel filter regularly every 15k. I have used Autozone's filter for the past 4 or 5 years. Starting back several months ago, I changed the filter, installed Autozone's Luberfiner filter (FF830). About a week later, I noticed diesel smell and saw that diesel was standing in the valley. I found a small leak around the filter lid. I couldn't 'tighten it out' so I replaced the filter with another FF830, and it seemed to be fine until 2 weeks ago when I noticed another small leak. I put another FF830 on it, and it leaked profusely. Again, I tried adjusting tightness, etc. Fiddled with it all week, but couldn't get it to seal. I'm middle-aged and have worked on vehicles and machinery all my life, but all of a sudden I'm doubting myself and feeling like I couldn't change a screw-on filter correctly. Geez. Today, I picked up a WIX filter (33817) from O'Reilly ($40 - twice the cost). When I removed the Luberfiner, I noticed that the lid has a center projection/nipple that extends to push down on the spindle coming up from the base of the cannister. I'm not sure why this is needed... It seems from my observations that this center nipple was cut too long so that it is bottoming out on the spindle before it allows the outside threads (and the lid) to seat properly. I thought about cutting/grinding the nipple down, but then thought, what the heck, just replace it. The WIX appears to have seated better and leaking has stopped. I washed down the motor with a hose, and I'll watch it closely over the next week or so.
Has anyone experienced anything similar?? Note that I noticed no issues with the threads of the lid mating up with the cannister, only that the lid wouldn't seal/seat properly. Also, I'm in North Texas near Dallas if that makes any difference for the parts stores I've used.

Well I guess the bottom line is all filters aren't created equal. I don't think you can go wrong with a Wix on these rigs. Thats what I prefer to use. A cheap filter is just that. A cheap filter. The OEM Motorcraft / Racor (I think) using the OEM lid I have always found to be cumbersome. But I have since found the proper technique . If you don't have a OEM lid get yourself of new one from IH or Ford. Dieselfiltersonline.com is a great source.
The nipple on the caps opens a spring loaded valve (for lack of a better word) in the standpipe so filtered fuel flows back to the high pressure side (second stage) of the fuel pump and on to the injectors.
Hey Fellers, I just want to follow up once more. I've run over a week with the Wix filter installed. Tonight I crawled up top to take a look. After I had installed the Wix over a week ago, I washed off the top of the motor with a garden hose. Tonight, the valley was bone dry; not a drop of diesel anywhere. So, I'm gonna conclude that my problem was some type of incompatibility with the Luberfiner filter. Hope this post saves someone some time. Happy holidays.

I wish I read this thread before I went to auto zone and got the FRAM FF830.
It does not work in my 95..... even though it says it does. It was squirting all over.
I put the old one in and the bottom is marked cs7715 which is a fram part also.
What is weird is the Motorcraft # is fd-4595 and the fram is ff830 - l4595.
I'm going to try a napa 3517 or 3817w/lid.
Just responding to this old thread to get more info into the database that the autozone fram filter does not fit right, maybe save some one some hassle.

I'm a newbie, just got it.
[edit-- had for 5 yrs, still a noob]
Thanks for posting your findings. The Luber-liner people thought I was crazy on the phone "we sell thousands of these...".
Advance Auto sells one that works if that helps.
