Need Help!! No start..Possible IDM??

I want to start with a thanks to all that post and help me through this issue I'm new to the forum. I went to start my 96 PSD the other morning and it popped but shut down. Twice this happened. I fired the plugs like I normally would and haven't been able to start since. I have previously replaced the CPS. I went to scan my truck for codes thinking this might possibly be the problem again but I cant get the same scanner to read my truck. Keeps telling me to plug the scanner into the truck when it is. So after talking to a couple of people, I was told the computer wont release codes if the IDM is shot. The IDM makes sense because when I try to start my truck it feels like it is free wheeling and there is no smoke coming out of the tailpipe. Does this make sense to anyone else? I also don't know the exact location of the IDM on my 96. P.S. If I can't fix this soon it might be for sale LOL.

IDM is located on the drivers side inner fender, silver looking box with a large wiring harness running to it. more info on your truck, does it have a chip? are you sure the glow plugs are working properly? does it show RPM's while cranking?

Is the Wait-to-Start light coming on? If not, see if underhood fuse #22 is blown. If it is, disconnect the wire for the fuel heater (wire about halfway down the driver's side of the filter bowl with a funky spade connector), replace the fuse and see if it starts. Cheers!
