New Member, First Truck, Advice Required

Hello,

First post here, have been browsing as a guest for a while.

A bit about me: I'm a mechanical engineer, been looking for a Ford 7.3L for a while. My parents had a couple while I was in college/university and I've wanted my own ever since.

Found this truck locally, going to see it in the morning.

Craigslist ad here: 1994 F-250 XLT Turbo diesel, manual, 4 X 4, low km, ready to haul toys

The claimed mileage 260,000kms = approx 162,000 miles. The owner mentioned also that one battery cable is corroded and will need replacement.

Please let me know you thoughts about this truck!! Hoping to knock some dollars off the price due to the battery cable at least. Don't forget, the price is shown in Canadian dollars.

Looking forward to being part of this site!

Take a good look at the front suspension. It has the independent (not a straight axle),
IT may need some work(check for uneven tire wear, look at the rear tires as well, they may have been rotated). Test the 4wheel drive, high and low range.

I'm not a mechanic but there is a reason I wish I would've looked closer at these areas.

You will need to determine if it is a Power Stroke or a turbo IDI

Ford offered three engines in 1994:

The InDirect Injected (IDI) diesel, normally aspirated

The IDI Turbo, mechanical injection pump and a turbocharger.

The Direct Injected (DI) diesel Power Stroke, electronically controlled injection system.

The IDI Turbo and the Power Stroke were both badged TURBODIESEL but the Power Stroke was a mid year introduction and was only available with a manual transmission. If it was an automatic it would be clear it is an IDI Turbo, since it has a manual tranny it could be either an IDI or a Power Stroke.

Check the eighth character in the VIN number. If it is an F then the truck was built with a Power Stroke engine. If it is an M the truck was built with a non-turbocharged Indirect Injected diesel. If it is a K the truck was built with an IDI Turbo diesel but is NOT a Power Stroke. If you can get a picture of the engine bay and post it we can see what it is and give you better information about the engine.

As for the rest, 162,000 miles is not an issue for a properly maintained diesel truck. If you can get maintenance records (or even look at them) see if it has the original clutch and, if it has been replaced, whether or not it was replaced with a Single Mass Flywheel. Ford built these with a dual mass flywheel (two pieces with the isolator springs in the flywheel instead of the clutch disc) that is an issue when it fails. Many folks replace with a single mass flywheel conversion kit.

Cool. Thanks for your replies.

I believe the engine is the 7.3L Powerstroke, but I'll obviously confirm tomorrow.

We just watched a pile of videos from powerstrokehelp.com so we'll see what we see. The price is pretty tempting for this area and comparably spec'd vehicles...any comment from you guys?

The current owner had the clutch replaced and isn't aware of any flywheel issues.

It's pulled heavy and hard to have needed a clutch. Heavy horse trailers means the powertrain has been worked hard, also Canada is cold in most winters.

Thanks everybody for your thoughts. The truck was a little rougher than we thought, and we didn't want to take on the financial risks associated with the likelihood of requiring the front end rebuild. On to the next one I guess!
