I just replaced the glow plug relay with the Stancor 586-902, but I don't think that was my problem to begin with. The problem I had was hard to start when cold in the morning only and also I've been noticing that the glow plugs aren't cycling like they used to.
I recall some years back hearing a slight clicking noise and the voltmeter slightly ticking for about 60 seconds or so, but that's not happening now. All fuses are OK. Is there a controller problem that's a relatively easy DIY fix? Is it something I can diagnose myself?
Thanks!

For what it's worth, I'm actually an older member with many more posts before this board changed its format. It wouldn't accept my old log-on. This board has helped keep my '96 alive and running all these years- thanks!

I would start by checking to make sure you GPR is actually working. Use a volt meter and measure the DC voltage across the two big posts. When truck is in the 'Wait to Start' condition, you should have less than .4 volts difference across the two posts of the relay. If you have battery voltage difference then your relay is not being turned on. Then you need to check the two small connection points to see if your PCM is sending a ground signal to the relay to turn it on.
If that all checks out...then measure the glow plug resistance by disconnecting the four plugs on the inside of the valve cover and measure the resistance (ohms) on the outer two pins. They should all read 1 to 6 ohms. The lower the better. Usually new or good used plugs will read around 2 ohms or less. If your plugs are okay then have your batteries load tested. You need two good batteries to cold start a PSD. If the batteries are okay then test your starter motor. Tired starters won't spin fast enough to build up pressure in the cylinders. If all the above is good then inspect all your battery cables and starter motor cables. Corrosion will cause problems too. These are the normal things to check for Cold Start problems. Check these first. If you are still having problems let us know.
Good Luck,
Griz
