Hello, I am in the market to buy a diesel and I really like the OBS fords. How many miles is too many for these trucks? I mean with normal wear and tear, is there a time when these trucks get too worn out? I have found several trucks in the low to mid 200k mile range and im not sure how much more they have in them... I hope my questions make sense. thanks in advance for the help.

200K is like an teenager for an OBS PSD. 500K is the average for them, there are some with 1000k in the clock. Well I forgot to mention that all depends in the regular maintenance
I just bought my truck with 250k on the clock and it runs like a bear. I did of course have a lengthy conversation with the PO about his maintenance schedule with the truck and he assured me of his vigilant maintenance and the condition of the truck reflects it. If it needed it it got it. I only paid 4400 for mine so that might give you something to go off of but I do think I got mine at a killer deal. Good luck in your hunt.

There's a 1997 Ford diesel van on ebay right now with 745,000 miles on it. I guess they can go a long time

I've bought four over 200k PowerStrokes over the years. None have had engine problems other than with the glow plug system. All but one have needed to have basically the full suspension/steering systems gone thru. Ball joints, tie rods, shocks, brakes, etc. If you can do this yourself and use quality lifetime warranty parts you'll have a solid truck for years to come at a reasonable price. Find a diesel expert and pay to have a thorough prebuy inspection done with a PowerStroke specific scan tool. This will tell you a lot. Know how the truck should perform when you drive it. You can tell if it is down on power if you have driven several. Pay attention to the clutch on a 5-speed. The dual mass flywheels fail and there are many posts on that. Problem can be solved with a Luk single mass flywheel and clutch. The automatics are somewhat weak with the earlier years being the worst. Can be solved with a BTS transmission. Many posts on that too. I'd also take a real close look at the body seams on the cab. The drip rail area over the doors appears to have sealant that starts cracking and would likely lead to rust. Maybe someone else can tell you more about that....I've just noticed it on a few OBS trucks.

Ok, I think I have enough to start looking. I dont know how easy it will be to find someone here in Jacksonville who knows OBS PSD's but I will give it a shot. Thanks guys for all of your help...
Are the crew cabs worth more than the ex. cabs? I would like to have a crew but they seem to be harder to find.

You are welcome. IMHO the CC are more worth than the EC. I would like to find one with short bed, that are ever more harder to find, I need one because the kids are growing.
I looked for a year and a half for a short bed 4x4 with a 5 speed. It had 180k, came from a lot that got it through the usual auction. I did find out it came from Elmo UT, a tiny town I hear. I had no history to go on and it had 180k. It has 220k now, and the only thing that really NEEDED replaced on the powertrain was the injectors which are pretty much done by 200k. Not necessarily going to fail, but kind of like worn spark plugs.
I completely agree with the post on the suspension and chassis rebuild as you go.
