oops #2

I lost a small 3/8" to 1/2" size little screen that I took out to clean. It goes between the fuel bowl and the fpr. I had another thread that died, I still dont know what screen I need. I went to the dealership yesterday and said that the part/kit had been discontiuned and that I would have to get a whole new fuel bowl assembly that was $511. I just need the screen and a new oring. Ive been running the truck as is for 500miles. How much good can the screen be b/c the fuel runs through the filter first is it even really needed or does someone have a IH part#?

Here is a pic of where it is on the truck. It is where the tip of my knife is.

Are you serious? Take out your air filter while you are at it and replace it with some large mesh screen!

The IH part number is 1824417c91. The part from Ford is the IH part repackaged.

And don't lose the little white ball behind the filter, it's unobtainable. The dealer couldn't even find it in his parts diagram.

I never saw a white ball, the screen I lost was at the end of the pencil size hole in the top of the fuel bowl. On my truck there was a screen between the hole in the top of the fuel bowl and the fpr.

The air filter has been off since I ported/polished the intake by throwing 1 tablespoon of sandblasting media every 20 seconds into the turbo. It sure is fun watch the blades on the turbo suck in moths and bumble bee's.

But yes I had to drive it today to get mulch to a jobsite, Ive been trying to get a replacement screen. I know the screen was in there for a reason but how bad of a design is the fuel filter if its not filtering good enough that a screen you can see through catches something the fuel filter doesn't.

Thanks I will call tommorow and see if they have that but im pretty sure I remember him telling me that it was discontiuned. The only thing avaible was the entire fuel bowl assembley that was $511 for the 2cent piece of screen that I lost. I think i rembered seeing a pic of that kit in the first thread I started and it didn't look like the screen I lost.

The screen I lost could be touched with a toothpick from inside the fuel bowl.
Thanks for the #

Trying to figure this out, found Sam miller article on changing the fuel pump, the part that I have in bold is what I was trying to do when I droped the screen into the valley of "your never going to get that back". Im trying to verify that the 10mm bolt that my knife is on in the pic I took in post #1 is one of the fpr bolts he describes below in bold. He list the part #'s but the orfice vent I saw a pic of didn't look like anything I had aprart??? Im lost here didn't see a spring either, or is there more missing than just the screen??

Draining the fuel filter/water separator canister. You will want to either place a container under the vehicle to catch the diesel (a hose pushed on to the drain tube sure prevents a mess), or pump the canister dry once you get the filter out, in which case you won’t slide the yellow lever to “DRAIN.” This is a good occasion to inspect and clean the interior of the canister, so removal of the filter and heater is advised. (Remember, the plastic heater standpipe is LEFT HAND THREADS.) A 7/8” crow’s foot wrench works best, but I have loosened it with a regular open-end wrench. Pull off the heater wire connector with needle-nose pliers. Now you can clean the canister and check for cracks or leaks. You’ll be amazed at the crud in there.

Disconnecting hoses. There are two hoses connected to the top of the pump and one at the bottom. The two top hoses are protected by a removable clip-on heat shield (just yank it off). You can only get to the clamp on the pump side of that bottom hose. And finally, the water drain hose at the front passenger side of the filter housing.

Remove the two bolts attaching the fuel pressure regulator with 10mm and carefully pry it back from the filter housing, taking care not to lose the O-ring. Good time to clean the screen and examine condition of O-ring. There is also a short section of 5/16” hose that may need to be replaced.

The spring you are referring to is in another location inside the FPR. Don't worry about that right now. Yes that is the FPR bolt right by your knife blade. There is a little screen(you know the one) and a round plastic piece with a teeny hole in it and an o-ring on it and behind that is a teeny little plastic ball. If you are gonna dig in that far I would say to go ahead and take the bowl assembly out(two bolts and a couple of clamps and disconnect the harness on pass. side of fuel bowl). You might get lucky and find your little screen down in there. I found tons of stuff when I just changed out my bowl and FPR assembly. You can get the whole thing from Powerstroke Shop for $270.00.

THANKYOU......

After reading for a few hours it seems that I am only about the 439 person to have questions about this, wish there were more pics. I now realize that the "orfice vent kit" is the screen that a few people said I lost but it didn't look like the ones in the pics b/c I believe my screen is seperated from the white plastic part because I didn't see a ball either. I hope they stayed stuck in the fpr and the screen was seperated b/c it was in the hole in the bowl.

If the ball is missing would the truck even run????

If you were standing on the front bumper lookiing at the bowl naming the parts from left to right would it be.....
Fuel Bowl, screen, oring, ball fpr?? is that how it goes togeter

I am guessing at this but the ball was missing on my old bowl and FPR setup and it ran like that. Yes I believe you have the parts order correct short of the ball since as I said it was missing in my old one and I don't have a need to take apart a two week old new part to find out.

The Vent Orifice Kit contains an o-ring plus the plastic piece that the screen is attached to. The ball is behind the plastic piece, so looking left to right you've got fuel bowl>>plastic piece with screen>>o-ring>>ball>>FPR housing.

I've read of other folks saying they didn't think they had a ball, and they were running without it. I really don't know how important the ball is, it's a check valve. Could the lack of the ball affect performance? I'd think *maybe*, since the screen clogging seems to affect performance.

Of course, the BEST solution...ditch the whole sordid mess and go with electric fuel. You'll never look back!!

Hey Guys thanks for the help I, I can't blame you for not wanting to take apart yours, I don't really want to take mine back apart to see if there is a ball in it right now and not have the screen to put back in. Im pretty sure the plastic piece was attached to the fpr and the sceen must have become seperated over the years so Ill keep my fingers crossed that it is behind the white plastice piece that the sceen is attached to. Here's my game plan.

Order F5TZ-9A214-A Orifice Vent Kit is $13.78 from powerstrokeshop.com
When it gets here Im going to take the bowl apart and clean the screen in the bottom of the bowl and get the junk out the bottom of the bowl, if i get brave I might take it all the way off and go ahead and replace the rubber fuel lines. Then take the fpr loose and put the new screen and oring in and pray i find a ball there.

Fuel Pressure Regulator California Kit part number F6TZ-9K061-AA
FPR Kit Ford # F6TZ-9157-BA
What do these kits contain? I heard the Califonia Kit was about the same as shiming the spring (which I would like to do and there is another screen in the fpr that can be cleaned that I havn't messed with)
