PCM, ECM, or ECU replacement

I'm replacing the ECM in my 97 F350 powerstroke automatic. Tried to buy a replacement from one dealer and they said they have to do it because they have to download the program from my old ECM and load it onto the new one. Called another dealer and they said that is not true. That Ford sends them out with the basic program and you just have to bring it in to get any updates from Ford. Called a mechanic I knew and he said that it does come programmed but may not be exact to your engine transmission match and so it might run or might not.

Anyone know which story it true?

Thanks

Re: PCM, ECM, or ECU replacement

Jody aka DP Tuner can reflash your PCM with the code you would need or even a performance tune in there if that helps any. I saw a TDE0 pcm on ebay I think just the other day for a decent price.

You can get them at autozone for around $200 too...

Good Luck,

Re: PCM, ECM, or ECU replacement

first, why do you think you need to replace it? msot times when teh scanner or books say replace PCM, is because they don't know what the actual cause is. usually it works / don't work. You can order the PCM code you wish , a TED0 or TED1 is what programmers usually use to base their stuff on for autos.

Re: PCM, ECM, or ECU replacement

Thanks for all the reply's,

Dealer diagnosed it as needing replaced because the tranny would not shift into overdrive (see posting entitled Powertrain control module from last weekend).

Question was because of the many different stories I was getting as I called around to see what I could get one for.

I ended up buying one this afternoon, I put it in, plugged it in and the truck ran fine so I guess the story that it was plug and play was correct. That dealer did tell me that I would have to bring it in to get any update that the Ford may have put out.

Once again, thanks.

Yeah right, if they don't know if there is an update or not, I would not bring it in just to find out. They should already know if there is or isn't one. $$$$$$tealer$hip!

Re: PCM, ECM, or ECU replacement

What's the best way to tell if it needs updating, for those of us who have bought used trucks?

Thanks,

Michael

Re: PCM, ECM, or ECU replacement

My advice is to not allow the dealer to "upgrade" the programming. You might not like what you get (BTDT) and you can't go back. Instead spend the money on a good chip with the programming you want. There can be more than higher power in a chip.
